India’s R Raja Rithvik became chess Grandmaster after he crossed the ELO Rating of 2500. Former world champion and Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand praised the 17-year old Warangal native for entering the GM club R Raja Rithvik has become India’s 70th and latest chess Grandmaster, achieving his third and final norm at a recent event in Hungary. A native of Warangal, Rithvik has been undergoing advanced coaching at RACE Chess Academy under reputed coach N.V.S. Rama Raju.

IRCTC Partners with Cordelia Cruises to launch India’s first indigenous luxury cruise liner

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) started India’s first indigenous cruise liner on September 18, 2021, in partnership with Cordelia Cruises, a private company operated by M/s Waterways Leisure Tourism Pvt. Ltd.

“IRCTC has joined hands and signed the agreement with Cordelia Cruises being operated by M/s Waterways Leisure Tourism Pvt. Ltd for promotion and marketing of the first indigenous luxury cruise in India. This is another incredible luxury travel offering under IRCTC”s umbrella of tourism services to the public,” the railway PSU said in a statement.

The luxurious cruise will take the passengers on-boards to some of the most popular Indian and international tourist destinations such as  Diu, Kochi, Goa, the Lakshadweep islands, and Sri Lanka. In phase I, the cruise will have its base from Mumbai and will sail to Indian destinations only.

India ranked 46th in the Global Innovation Index 2021; Top- Switzerland

India has improved its ranking in the latest Global Innovation Index (GII), moving up two positions to 46, the 2021 report released by World Intellectual Property Organization. Switzerland has topped the ranking.

The Global Innovation Index 2021 captures the innovation ecosystem performance of 132 economies and tracks the most recent global innovation trends. India has climbed 2 spots from last year’s ranking. Under the Lower middle-income category group, India has been ranked at the second spot after Vietnam.

HDFC Bank, Paytm to launch co-branded credit cards in October 2021

HDFC Bank has partnered with Paytm to launch co-branded credit cards with an aim to provide one of the widest range of offerings across customer segments, with a special focus on millennials, business owners, and merchants. The HDFC Bank-Paytm co-branded credit cards will be launched in October 2021, during the festive season.

The collaboration between HDFC Bank and Paytm is part of the strategies of the HDFC Bank to regain its lost market share in the credit card space due to the ban imposed on it by RBI for eight months as a penalty, following several outages in its digital offerings.

The credit cards, powered by Visa, will be customized to meet the distinct needs of retail customers, from new-to-credit users to affluent users, and offer one of the best-in-class rewards and cashback for users. The new cards offer will also facilitate small business owners, the companies said in a release.

Iran becomes 9th member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation

Iran has become a permanent member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the Eurasian political, economic, and security alliance led by Russia and Chaina.

“This strategic membership will have an important impact on the process of multilateral cooperation of Iran with neighbors and Asian countries,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian announced on Twitter on 17 September.

Iran’s permanent membership was approved during the 21st Meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in the Tajik capital Dushanbe. The country obtained observer status in the organization in June 2005, and in 2008, applied for full membership.

At the end of the 21st Summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the leaders of the eight main members of the organisation agreed to change the membership of the Islamic Republic of Iran from an observer member to a full member and signed the relevant documents. Accordingly, the technical process of Iran becoming one of the main members of the organisation has begun and Iran will henceforth cooperate and interact with member countries as the main member of the important regional organisation.

Thanu Padmanabhan passes away

Renowned theoretical physicist and recipient of Padma Shri, Professor Thanu Padmanabhan died due to cardiac arrest in Pune on Friday, a former colleague said. He was 64. He was a distinguished professor at the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA). Prof Padmanabhan has written over 300 papers in international journals and also authored several books, with important contributions in areas of gravitation, quantum gravity, and structure and formation of the universe.
