N Biren Singh takes oath as Chief Minister of Manipur for a second five-year term

Senior BJP leader N Biren Singh took oath as Chief Minister of Manipur for a second consecutive five-year term on March 21, 2022. The oath of office was administered by Manipur Governor La Ganesan at the Raj Bhawan in Imphal.

The ruling BJP party contested all 60 seats in Manipur Assembly election in 2022 and won 32 seats. Nongthombam (N) Biren Singh started his career as a footballer, then turned to journalism, before joining politics.

Ashish Jha appointed US COVID-19 response chief

Ashish Jha has been appointed the new White House Covid-19 Response Coordinator. Dr Jha who replaces Jeff Zeints is a physician of Indian origin who lives in the US.  

He is an infectious disease expert and the Dean of Brown University’s School of Public Health. He has worked on the ebola virus and served as co-chair of a panel to combat the disease’s breakout in West Africa in 2014. Born in Bihar in 1970, he migrated to Canada in 1979, and then to the US in 1983.

Viktor Axelsen of Denmark won the men’s single title in All England Open Badminton World Championships 2022.

In the final he defeated India’s Lakshya Sen in the final.

9th India-Seychelles Joint Military Exercise ‘LAMITIYE-2022’ to begin from March 22

An Indian Army contingent arrived in Seychelles on Monday for the ninth edition of the Joint Military Exercise ‘LAMITIYE-2022’ between the Indian Army and Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF). The exercise is being conducted at the Seychelles Defence Academy (SDA) from March 22 to 31.

The Indian Army contingent will be represented by the 2/3 GORKHA RIFLES group (PIRKANTHI Battalion). Exercise LAMITIYE is a biennial training event, being conducted in Seychelles since 2001.

The objective of this joint training exercise is to build and promote bilateral military relations, sharing experiences gained during various operations; exchanging skills and good practices between both the armies.

HDFC Bank to launch “SmartHub Vyapar programme” and “Autofirst” application for small business loans

HDFC Bank has announced to launch the following two initiatives/applications to give a digital push to small business loans. ‘AutoFirst’ application: that will offer fully automated auto loans.

SmartHub Vyapar programme–  It is an app that bundles all payment platforms – cards, UPI, QR code, tap pay and SMS-based payments. The programme for merchants will be launched soon and is in the pilot phase.

Serdar Berdimuhamedov was sworn in as Turkmenistan’s new president on March 19, 2022, officially taking the reins of the Central Asian country from his father. 

Berdimuhamedow succeeds his father and former president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who became president in 2006 and served till 2022. It must be noted that the presidential elections in Turkmenistan are held every seven years.

Neeraj Chopra and Mirabai Chanu wins ‘Sportstar of the Year’ award at 2022 Sportstar Aces Awards

Tokyo Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra won the coveted Sportstar of the Year (Male) award on Saturday at the 2022 Sportstar Aces Awards at the Taj Mahal Palace hotel. In female category, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu received the ‘Sportstar of the Year’ award.

The Sportstar Aces Awards celebrate the spirit of excellence in sport. The awards were presented by Byju’s Classes, with IDFC First Bank as the Associate Partner.

Mayor of Antananarivo Naina Andriantsitohaina and India’s Ambassador to Madagascar Abhay Kumar inaugurated the green space at a special ceremony.

India’s Ambassador to Madagascar said the green triangle highlights Gandhi’s vision regarding reducing consumerism and aiming for sustainable development.

The 36th International Geological Congress (IGC), themed “Geosciences: The Basic Science for a Sustainable Future” will be held here during 20-22 March, 2022 on a virtual platform. The 36th IGC has been organised jointly by the Ministry of Mines, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the Science Academies of Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

IIT Madras establishes AquaMAP Water Management and Policy Centre

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is establishing a new inter-disciplinary Water Management and Policy Centre called ‘AquaMAP’ to solve water problems in India. The AquaMAP was inaugurated at IIT Madras by Prof. K. Vijay Raghavan, the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, on March 19, 2022.

This Centre will provide smart solutions for challenging water problems by designing scalable models by leveraging innovative technologies. These models would be implemented at chosen locations across the country, as a proof of concept.

He also launched the website of AquaMAP– https://aquamap.iitm.ac.in/. Ligy Philip, department of Civil Engineering, IIT Madras, and dean (planning), IIT Madras, is the principal investigator of AquaMAP.

UN appoints Jayati Ghosh to high-level advisory board on multilateralism

Indian economist Jayati Ghosh has been appointed by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to a new high-level advisory board on effective multilateralism.

She is a Prof. at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She was previously a professor of economics and chairperson of the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. She is also a member of the UN’s high-level Advisory Board on Economic and Social Affairs.
