History of Republic Day

Republic Day marks the adoption of the Indian Constitution. 26th January was announced as Republic Day because the Indian National Congress published the Purna Swaraj or Declaration of Indian Independence on 26th January 1930 rejecting the dominance of the British government. India gained its Independence on 15th August 1947 and after a few days, on 29th August a committee was established to draft a long-term Constitution for an Independent India.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar served as the committee’s chair. The committee drafted the constitution, which was presented to the Constituent Assembly on November 4th, 1947. The assembly conducted multiple sessions for two years before finalizing the draft. After several meetings and discussions, the 308 Assembly Members signed two handwritten copies one in Hindi and one in English on 24th January 1950. On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution was ratified and took force. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was inaugurated as India’s first president on that day.

Republic Day 2023: Adaptation of the Constitution of India

The Constitution of India was drafted by the constituent assembly. The first session was held on 9th December 1946 and was attended by 207 members including nine females. The assembly originally had 389 members, but that number was later reduced to 299 following the independence and the partition.

The drafting committee was led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and who is also known as the Father of the Constitution. The committee separated 2,400 amendments from the constitution out of 7,600 amendments during the discussions. The Constitution of India was adopted at the Constituent Assembly’s final meeting on November 26, 1949, and it went into effect on January 26, 1950, which is recognised as Republic Day in India.

Significance of Republic Day 2023

On 26th January 1930, Indian National Congress (INC) declared Purna Swaraj and rejected the rule of the British Government. Hence, the constitution of India came into effect on 26th January 1950 and was celebrated as the Republic Day of India. Republic Day signifies the free and independent India after going through years of torture due to the British government.

  • Indian climate change documentary ‘All That Breathes’ got an Oscar nod in the Best Documentary Feature Film segment. Set in Delhi, the Shaunak Sen directorial follows two siblings, who have devoted their lives to rescuing and treating injured birds, especially black kites.
  • Additionally, “All That Breathes” is up for a BAFTA Award. It previously won the ‘World Cinema Grand Jury Prize: Documentary’ at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, a film gala that promotes independent cinema and filmmakers, and earned the Golden Eye award for the best documentary at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

After Co-Win, Govt Launches U-WIN To Digitise Universal Immunisation Programme: After the success of the Co-WIN platform, the government has now replicated it to set up an electronic registry for routine vaccinations. The initiative known as U-WIN has been implemented in a trial mode in two districts of each state and Union Territory in India in order to digitise the country’s Universal Immunization Program (UIP). Carrying vaccination cards of children and pregnant women, struggling to keep a tab on the next jab and other such hassles may soon become a thing of the past.

Significance of This Platform:

  • The platform will be used to register and immunise every expectant mother, record the outcome of her childbirth, record every newborn delivery, administer birth doses, and administer all subsequent vaccination events.
  • The U-WIN is going to be the single source of information for immunisation services, updating vaccination status, delivery outcome, planning of RI sessions and reports like antigen-wise coverage, etc.
  • There will be digital registrations of all pregnant women and newborns for individualised tracking for vaccination, reminders for upcoming doses and follow-up of dropouts.
  • Healthcare workers and programme managers will be able to generate real-time data of routine immunisation sessions and vaccination coverage for better planning and vaccine distribution.

Digitisation of Immunisation:

For pregnant women and children, vaccine acknowledgement and immunisation card linked to ABHA ID (Ayushman Bharat Health Account) will be generated and all states and districts can access a common database to track and vaccinate beneficiaries. Besides, through the platform citizens can check nearby ongoing routine immunisation sessions, and book appointments.

All states and UTs have been sensitised on U-WIN functionalities and objectives for the pilot in 65 districts and staff and healthcare workers have been trained on all modules of U-WIN. With this the entire vaccination system including records will get digitised, easing the tracking of beneficiaries. Beneficiaries will receive certificates immediately after the immunisation programme is fully digitalized, and they can download them if they so choose. Digi-lockers will be used to store these certificates.

Aid for the farming community:

The Cabinet has not yet given its approval to the Agriculture Ministry’s $2,481 billion plan to establish the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF). The project is set to run from the current fiscal year until 2025-26, with a goal of bringing 7.5 lakh farmers on board to practice non-chemical natural farming over 7.5 lakh hectares. According to the programme, farmers will get up to 15,000 per hectare (until 2025-26), based on any income lost as a result of switching to natural farming.

What is Organic Farming:

  • Organic farming is a type of agriculture or farming which avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, growth regulators, & livestock feed additives.

Odisha cabinet approves inclusion of 22 castes in State’s list of SEBC: Odisha cabinet on Saturday cleared the inclusion of 22 castes in the list of Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC). The state government has approved the proposed Amendment of the Odisha State Commission for Backward Classes Act, 1993 by inserting subsection 3 under Section 9. This enables the State Government to include such Backward Classes in the State list of SEBCs.

Indi Grid to buy Khargone Transmission for ₹1497cr: India Grid Trust (IndiGrid) will acquire a 100% equity stake in Khargone Transmission at an enterprise value of around ₹1,497.5 crores. The acquisition will be for a cash consideration of an enterprise value not exceeding ₹1,497.5Cr, according to a BSE filing.

Agreement signed: IndiGrid signed a share purchase agreement on Jan 21, 2023, for the acquisition of a 100% shareholding and economic interest, in one or more tranches, in Khargone Transmission Ltd from Sterlite Power Transmission Ltd (one of the Sponsor of IndiGrid), it stated.
