Republic Day 2023: The 74th Republic Day of India will be observed on January 26, 2023. The Indian Constitution was adopted on this day in 1950. One of the most significant national holidays in India is Republic Day, often referred to as Gantantra Diwas. 26th January 1950 makes the establishment of the Indian Constitution was prepared by the members of the Constituent Assembly which emerged after the brutal colonial past.

History of Republic Day

Republic Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution. Because the Indian National Congress published the Purna Swaraj, or Declaration of Indian Independence, on that date in 1930, rejecting the hegemony of the British government, January 26 was declared Republic Day. India gained its Independence on 15th August 1947 and after a few days, on 29th August a committee was established to draft a long-term Constitution for an Independent India.

The chairperson of the committee was Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The constitution was drafted by the committee and delivered to the Constituent Assembly on 4th November 1947. The assembly conducted multiple sessions for two years before finalizing the draft. After several meetings and discussions, the 308 Assembly Members signed two handwritten copies one in Hindi and one in English on 24th January 1950. On January 26, 1950, the Indian Constitution was adopted and took force. Dr. Rajendra Prasad was inaugurated as India’s first president on that day.

Republic Day 2023: Adaptation of the Constitution of India

The Constitution of India was drafted by the constituent assembly. The first session was held on 9th December 1946 and was attended by 207 members including nine females. The assembly originally had 389 members, but that number was later reduced to 299 following the independence and the partition.

The drafting committee was led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and who is also known as the Father of the Constitution. The committee separated 2,400 amendments from the constitution out of 7,600 amendments during the discussions. The last session of the Constituent Assembly was held on 26th November 1949 when the Constitution of India was adopted, Moreover, it became effective on January 26, 1950, which is recognised as Republic Day in India.

Significance of Republic Day 2023

On 26th January 1930, Indian National Congress (INC) declared Purna Swaraj and rejected the rule of the British Government. Hence, the constitution of India came into effect on 26th January 1950 and was celebrated as the Republic Day of India. Republic Day signifies the free and independent India after going through years of torture due to the British government.

The WCO, previously known as the Customs Co-operation Council (CCC), was formed in 1952 in Brussels. At the time, only 17 member countries participated in the event. The organisation has since grown to have 183 members. Approximately 98 percent of global trade is managed through it.

Women’s IPL teams auction: Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, has stated that the winning bids were Rs. 4,669.99 crore (USD 572.78 million approx). The owners of men’s IPL teams Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore, as well as the Adani Group and Capri Global, have won bids to own the five women’s IPL teams at the auction ahead of the inaugural edition to be played in March this year. The teams will be headquartered in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, and Lucknow, respectively, and the competition will be called as the Women’s Premier League (WPL).The winners were identified after opening sealed bids.

Sharma, a former civil servant, will succeed N Srinath, who stepped down as the CEO of Tata Trusts last year following his retirement. Tata Trusts will replace the Ford Foundation as Uppaluri’s new organisation. The 48-year-old is currently the Ford Foundation’s programme director for India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
