Aircraft Carrier INS Vikrant to be introduce in Indian Navy by 2022
India’s first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) to be commissioned by 2022 and its combat capability, reach and versatility will add formidable capabilities in the country’s defence.
The IAC boasts of nearly 75 percent indigenous content, from design to steel used in construction, to key weapons and sensors.
Indian Navy’s Directorate of Naval Design (DND) has designed the IAC, which will is being built at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) and will have a displacement of 40,000 tonnes.
IAC, which is 262 metres long and 62 metres wide, will be able to launch 30 aircraft, including 20 fighter jets and 10 helicopters.
The ship will be compatible with the MiG-29K and LCA Navy aircraft and will have two runways and a landing strip with STOBAR (short take off but arrested delivery) equipment.
WhatsApp tied up with NSDC to launch the ‘Digital Skill Champions Program’
The National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and WhatsApp launched the Digital Skill Champions Program that aims to train India’s youth in digital skills, in order to make them employment ready.
Through this program, school and university students will be coached on digital skills including digital safety and online privacy.
At the end of the course, students will receive the ‘Digital Skill Champions’ certification.
The initiative will kick off with a pilot across 50 campuses in five states – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.
Through this program, WhatsApp will conduct training sessions to familiarise Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra trainers with the WhatsApp Business app.
Saurabh Chaudhary won Bronze Medal in ISSF World Cup 2021
Shooter Saurabh Chaudhary got India off the mark as he clinched the bronze medal in men’s 10m air pistol at the shooting World Cup in Osijek.
He was the youngest Indian gold medalist at the Asian Games. He had earlier won gold medals and set a new junior world record in the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany.
He is the only Indian shooter to win a gold medal in ISSF World Championship, ISSF World Cup, Youth Olympic Games, Asian Games and Asian Air Gun Championship.
He broke his own world record with a score of 245.5 and claimed gold in Junior Men 10m Air Pistol at 2018 World Championship in Changwon, Korea.
DRDO successfully test-fired the subsonic cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’
Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test-fired the subsonic cruise missile ‘Nirbhay’.
Nirbhay is a long-range, all-weather, subsonic cruise missile designed and developed in India by the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) which is under DRDO.
The missile can be launched from multiple platforms and is capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads. It is currently deployed in limited numbers in LAC during standoff with China.
Nirbhay is powered by a solid rocket booster for take-off which is developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL).
Upon reaching the required velocity and height, a Turbofan engine in the missile takes over for further propulsion.
The missile is guided by an inertial navigation system developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI) and a radio altimeter for the height determination.
China is going to run first electric train in Tibet
China operationalised its first fully electrified bullet train in the remote Himalayan region of Tibet, connecting the provincial capital Lhasa and Nyingchi.
The 435.5-km Lhasa-Nyingchi section of the Sichuan-Tibet Railway has been inaugurated ahead of the centenary celebrations of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC) on July 1.
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway will be the second railway into Tibet after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. It will go through the southeast of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, one of the world’s most geologically active areas.
The Sichuan-Tibet Railway starts from Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province, and travels through Ya’an and enters Tibet via Qamdo, shortening the journey from Chengdu to Lhasa from 48 hours to 13 hours.
Nyingchi is prefecture-level city of Medog which is adjacent to the Arunachal Pradesh border. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as part of South Tibet, which is firmly rejected by India. The India-China border dispute covers the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Japan to provide USD 9.3 million aid to India to build cold chain system
Japan recently announced to provide USD 9.3 million worth cold chain equipment and related assistance to India to help in the country’s fight against COVID-19 pandemic.
Japan has led the operationalisation of the COVAX Facility as an international mechanism for the procurement of vaccines, and recently announced USD 800 million of financial contribution in addition to existing USD 200 million.
Japan’s Emergency Grant Aid aims to deliver vaccines to each and every person in the all corners of developing countries, which will complement efforts of the COVAX Facility.
Government launched a Rapid Antigen Test kit for COVID-19
The government launched an “affordable” and “accurate” Rapid Antigen Test kit for Covid developed by The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
The kit costs just Rs 50, and is hundred per cent indigenously developed and manufactured.
The Antigen testing kit has been developed by IIT-D’s Centre for Biomedical Engineering (CBME) led by Professor Harpal Singh.

He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 for Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra, his novel in English.
Bond has written hundreds of short stories, essays, novellas and books for children. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2014.

India Smart Cities Award Contest 2020
Uttar Pradesh has been ranked as top performing state under the Smart Cities Mission’s India Smart Cities Award Contest 2020.
Madhya Pradesh comes second on the list while Tamil Nadu grabbed the third position. Surat and Indore bagged the best award for their overall performance in 2020.
Indore and Surat won the City Award jointly this year for their overall development and Uttar Pradesh won the state award.
The top 9 performing cities which have been awarded 4 star rating are Surat, Indore, Ahmedabad, Pune, Vijayawada, Rajkot, Visakhapatnam, Pimpri-Chinchwad and Vadodara.
These awards were announced on June 25 to mark six years of the three urban missions of the Central government – Smart Cities Mission, Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban.
National Convention on Prevention of Maternal, Adolescent and Childhood Obesity
NITI Aayog recently convened the National Convention on Prevention of Maternal, Adolescent and Childhood Obesity under the chairmanship of Dr. V.K. Paul, Member (Health), NITI Aayog and Co-chairmanship of Dr. R Hemalatha, Director, Nutrition Institute of India.
In the National Consultation global experts, representatives from UN bodies, central ministries and national research institutions presented their evidence regarding increasing prevalence of obesity and presented best practices for obesity reduction.
All panellists expressed unanimous need to address this issue on a priority basis, with a resounding emphasis on better mass communication around encouraging physical activity, healthy eating and lifestyle.
A need for a whole of government and a whole of society approach was emphasised in tackling the twin challenge of obesity and under.
An urgent need for adopting strategies related to fiscal measures, regulating front-of-package labelling, promoting healthy diet, physical activity and lifestyle options emerged as key themes for future deliberations and actions.
Exotic dragon fruit from Maharashtra exported to Dubai
A consignment of fibre and mineral rich ‘Dragon Fruit’, also referred as Kamalam, has been exported to Dubai from Tadasar village, Sangli district, Maharashtra.
Scientifically referred to as Hylocereusundatus, the dragon fruit is grown in countries such as Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, the USA and Vietnam.
Dragon fruit production commenced in India in early 1990s and was grown as home gardens.
Dragon Fruit has become increasingly popular in recent years in the country as it has been taken up for cultivation by farmers across various states.
At present, dragon fruit is grown mostly in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The cultivation requires less water and can be grown in various kinds of soils. There are three main varieties of dragon fruit: white flesh with pink skin, red flesh with pink skin, and white flesh with yellow skin.
Indian Navy’s Joint Exercises with friendly Navies in Africa and Europe
Indian Naval Ship Tabar commenced her prolonged deployment on 13 June and will visit a number of ports in Africa and Europe till end September, towards enhancing military cooperation with friendly nations.
During port visits, Tabar will conduct professional, social and sporting interactions. The ship will also participate in a number of joint exercises with friendly navies
INS Tabar, is a Talwar-class stealth Frigate built for Indian Navy in Russia. The ship is commanded by Captain M Mahesh and has a complement of 300 personnel.
The ship is equipped with a versatile range of weapons and sensors and is among the earliest stealth frigates of the Indian Navy.
The ship is part of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet which is based at Mumbai under Western Naval Command.
