The World Bank has pledged to boost available funding for COVID-19 vaccine purchases and deployment to $20 billion from a previous target of $12 billion, citing a sharp increase in overall financing demand from developing countries.

The global development bank had already provided more than $4 billion to 51 developing countries for the purchase and deployment of COVID-19 vaccines, and would add billions for 25 more countries soon.

In a joint statement, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the World Health Organization urged G20 countries to embrace vaccinated population targets of at least 40% by the end of 2021 and 60% by the first half of 2022.

They also urged the G20 major economies, whose finance leaders meet next week in Italy, to adopt the goal of sharing at least 1 billion vaccine doses with developing countries this year, and to increase financing and eliminate trade barriers in the vaccine supply chain.

New maximum temperature has been recorded in Antarctica

The United Nations World Meteorological Organization has confirmed that Antarctica logged temperatures up to 18.3 degrees Celsius, a new maximum temperature record for the region, on February 6 earlier this year.

With this, Antarctica has now become one of the fastest-warming regions in the world — registering a rise of almost three degrees Celsius in the last 50 years.

According to the UN agency, the high temperatures in Antarctica are a result of a large high-pressure system creating “fohn conditions”, which are downslope winds creating significant surface warming.

The record was established after an extensive review conducted by the WMO’s Weather and Climate Extremes Archive on the weather situation in the Antarctica peninsula.

It, however, debunked reports suggesting that the Antarctic region crossed 20.7 degrees Celsius (69.3 degrees Fahrenheit) on February 9 last year.

Former Indian footballer M Prasannan passed away

Former international footballer M Prasannan passed away at the age of 73 years. He played for Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa in Santosh Trophy National Football Championship.

A gifted midfielder of the 1970s, he shared the dressing room with stalwarts of Indian football like Inder Singh and Doraiswamy Natraj.

Prasannan was part of the Indian team coached by PK Banerjee and captained by Inder Singh in the Merdeka Cup in 1973.

He scored a goal in the fifth-place playoff which India eventually lost to South Vietnam. Like the Brazilian legend Socrates of a later vintage, the bearded Prasannan sported a characteristic headband whenever he stepped onto the field.

Born in Kozhikode in Kerala, Prasannan started his footballing journey at St. Joseph’s School. He got into the Kerala state junior team in 1965 and the senior team three years later.
