HDFC Life to acquire Exide Life Insurance for ₹6,687 crore
India’s largest private insurer HDFC Life Insurance on Friday announced that its board has approved acquisition of 100% of the share capital of Exide Life Insurance Company for a total consideration of ₹6,687 crore. Shares of HDFC Life were trading over 3% lower on the BSE in Friday’s early deals whereas that of Exide Industries surged 10%.
HDFC Life has announced to acquire a 100 per cent stake in Exide Life Insurance Company in a stock and cash deal, for Rs 6,887 crore. Subsequently, Exide Life will be merged with HDFC Life, subject to regulatory approvals. Exide Life is a wholly-owned subsidiary of battery maker Exide Industries. This acquisition will mark one of the first and the largest acquisitions in the life insurance space.
About the deal:
- From the total deal value of Rs 6,887 crore, HDFC Life will pay Rs 725 crore in cash, while the balance amount will be in form of shares.
- HDFC Life will issue 87.02 million equity shares of the face value of Rs 10 at a price of Rs 685 per share to Exide Industries Limited.
- Post the acquisition, Exide Industries will hold a 4.1 per cent stake in merged HDFC Life and mortgage lender HDFC Ltd will hold 47.9 per cent. Currently, HDFC Ltd. holds a 49.9 per cent stake in HDFC Life.

India to host conference on International Climate Summit 2020-21
India will host a key conference as part of the International Climate Summit (ICS) 2020-21 today. The aim is to build a dialogue for India’s transition to clean energy. ICS 2021 is an initiative by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s Environment Committee that has partnered with Invest India. It is one of the world’s most awarded investment promotion agencies and a co-organizer for the hybrid event, slated to be held today.

Canadian City Burnaby to Observe September 5 As Gauri Lankesh Day
The Canadian city of Burnaby declared that Sep 5 will be observed as ‘Gauri Lankesh Day’. It will be a tribute to the journalist and activist on her death anniversary. On Thursday, September 2, her sister Kavitha Lankesh said to PTI that she has received a proclamation regarding the same. Gauri Lankesh was shot outside her Bengaluru residence in 2017
The proclamation issued by the office of the Mayor of Burnaby Mike Hurley said Gauri Lankesh was a courageous Indian journalist who stood up for truth and justice, challenged superstition and social ills, and dedicated her life to serving the poor and oppressed.
Gauri Lankesh, a left-leaning journalist who brought out a magazine “Gauri Lankesh Patrike”, was shot dead by two assailants on September 5, 2017 evening just outside her house in Bengaluru allegedly for her anti-Hindutva stand.
Maharashtra to set up science city named after Rajiv Gandhi in Pune
The Maharashtra Government has decided to set up a world-class science city at Pimpri-Chinchwad near Pune to develop a scientific outlook among the students and prepare them to become students in future. The project, named Bharat Ratna Rajiv Gandhi Science Invention City, aims to promote scientific temper among students in Maharashtra and train them to effectively use science and technology to address society’s problems. The project is estimated to cost Rs 190 crore.
India signed Project Agreement for Air-Launched Unmanned Aerial Vehicle with US
The Defense Ministry (India) has signed a Project Agreement (PA) for Air-Launched Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (ALUAV) under the Joint Working Group Air Systems in the Defense Technology and Trade Initiative (DTTI) with the US Department of Defense. The Air-Launched UAV PA falls under the Research, Development, Testing, and Evaluation (RDT&E) Memorandum of Agreement between the Indian Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense that was first signed in January 2006, and renewed in January 2015. The agreement is a significant step towards deepening the defense technology collaboration between the two nations, through co-development of defense equipment.

28th EDITION OF SINGAPORE-INDIA MARITIME BILATERAL EXERCISE ‘SIMBEX’
The Indian Navy was represented by Guided Missile Destroyer INS Ranvijay with a ship borne helicopter, ASW Corvette INS Kiltan and Guided Missile Corvette INS Kora and one P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Participants from the RSN included one Formidable Class Frigate, RSS Steadfast, embarked with an S-70B naval helicopter, one Victory Class Missile Corvette, RSS Vigour, one Archer Class Submarine and one Fokker-50 Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Four F-16 fighter aircraft of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) also participated in the exercise during the Air Defence Drills.
The 28th edition of the Singapore-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) was conducted between 02nd September 2021 and 04 September 21. the main purpose of this exercise was to boost the bilateral defence ties between both countries.

Manish Narwal wins Gold and Singhraj Adhana wins Silver in 50m Mixed Pistol (SH1) at Tokyo Paralympics
On 4th September 2021, Indian para-shooter Manish Narwal and Singhraj Adhana have won a gold medal and the silver medal in the P4 – Mixed 50m Pistol SH1 final respectively.
Shooter Manish Narwal smashed the Paralympic record to clinch India’s third gold in the ongoing Tokyo Games, while compatriot Singhraj Adana bagged the silver to make it a sensational one-two finish for the country on Saturday.
The gold and silver from the Faridabad duo took India’s medal tally to 15 — 3 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze.
- Manish scored 218.2 points to win gold while, Singhraj Adhana scored 216.7 points for sliver medal.
- Russia’s Sergey Malyshev claimed the bronze medal.
Shuttler Pramod Bhagat wins GOLD medal, Manoj Sarkar wins bronze at Tokyo Paralympics 2020
Tokyo Paralympics 2020 Highlights, Day 11: World number one shuttler in the men’s SL3 category, Pramod Bhagat won the gold medal in the Men’s Singles SL3 category, beating Great Britain’s Daniel Bethell in the final. Meanwhile, Manoj Sarkar defeated Japan’s Daisuke Fujihara to win the bronze medal. In Men’s Singles SL4 category, Suhas Yathiraj booked his spot in the gold medal match thereby assuring India of yet another medal by beating Indonesia’s Fredy Setiawan 21-9 21-15 in 31 minutes. Tarun Dhillon, however, lost to Lucas Mazur in a hard-fought semifinal clash that lasted for 63 minutes. Tarun lost the match 16-21, 21-16, 18-21. Navdeep finished fourth with a best throw of 40.80 in the Javelin throw F41 final.
On 4th September 2021, Indian shuttler Pramod Bhagat has won a Gold medal in the men’s singles badminton SL3 final match at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics, beating Daniel Bethell (Great Britain) by 2-0.

Teachers Day 2021 in India
September 5 is annually celebrated as Teachers’ Day to pay tribute to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and all teachers in the country.
The day memorializes the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. who was a philosopher and also a teacher and he made a lot of effort in order to contribute to the field of education. He used to say that “teachers should be the best minds in the country”.
Importance Of The Day
Much of the importance of this occasion lies in how it came to pass. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a professor, philosopher and bureaucrat all rolled into one. His personality evoked great respect from his students. When Radhakrishnan was the President of India, his students and friends once requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday. However, Dr Radhakrishnan, who has always been a man of principles, asked them to mark the day as not his birthday, but as Teachers’ Day.
