Legendary Singer Lata Mangeshkar passes away At 92

Legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai, on February 6, 2022. The veteran singer, popularly known as the Melody Queen, was 92. She had been admitted to hospital on 8 January after having tested positive for COVID-19. She started her singing career at the age of 13 and recorded her first song in 1942.

Lata Mangeshkar is lovingly referred to as the ‘Nightingale of India’. Queen of Melody was another nick name for her. Among Lata Mangeshkar’s most iconic songs is the patriotic composition Aye Mere Watan Ke Logo. She has won three National Film Awards. She owns a music label with the name LM Music.

Centre extends Indian Footwear and Leather Development Programme for five years from 2021-2026; Total Outlay: Rs. 1700 crore

Indian Footwear and Leather Development Programme (IFLDP) (erstwhile IFLADP) has been approved for continuation from 2021-22 with an approved financial outlay of ₹1,700 crore, said the ministry of commerce in a statement on Saturday. The programme was approved by the cabinet on 19 January for continuation till 31 March 2026, or till further review, whichever is earlier.

The purpose of IFLDP Programme is to develop infrastructure for the leather sector, which can address environmental concerns specific to the leather sector, facilitate additional investments, employment generation and increase in production. The scheme is implemented by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

IIT-Hyderabad launches AI-based platform for the disabled jobseekers- Swarajability

Swarajability, India’s first AI-based job portal for persons with disabilities, was launched to widen their opportunities with tech applications. It is presently the beta version of the portal. Developed in both web and mobile app versions for maximum reach, the platform aids people with disabilities like visual, hearing impairment, and locomotive disorders seeking employment.

The project is funded by Kotak Mahindra Bank and it has been developed in association with Youth4Jobs, Visual Quest apart from Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has cancelled the ‘Khadi Certification’ of Mumbai’s 68-year-old and famed ‘Khadi Emporium’, and banned it from sale of khadi products henceforth. This MKVIA was running the popular “Khadi Emporium” at Metropolitan Insurance House, Mumbai since 1954.

KVIC has canceled the license of MKVIA as the latter had started selling fake Khadi products, which was against the “zero tolerance” policy of KVIC against the sale of spurious/non-Khadi products

ADB committed record US$4.6-bn loans to India in 2021

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on February 06, 2022 said it provided a record USD 4.6 billion loans to India in 2021, including USD 1.8 billion towards coronavirus response. “The Asian Development Bank committed a record USD 4.6 billion in sovereign lending to India in 2021 for 17 loans.

The USD 1.8 billion COVID-19-related assistance included USD 1.5 billion for vaccine procurement and USD 300 million to strengthen primary health care in urban areas and the country’s future pandemic preparedness.

Indian Cricket team has defeated England by 4 wickets to win the 2022 ICC Under-19 World Cup Championship. PM Modi has dedicated the 216-feet tall ‘Statue of Equality’ in Hyderabad to the nation. It is the second tallest metallic statues in sitting position in the world.

The ‘Statue of Equality’ has been built to commemorate the 1000th birth anniversary of Sri Ramanujacharya, who promoted the idea of equality in all aspects of living, including faith, caste, and creed.

The International Cricket Stadium in Jaipur will be the second-largest cricket stadium in India and the third-largest in the world.

The new international stadium will be built by the Rajasthan Cricket Academy (RCA) on the Jaipur-Delhi bypass, over 100 acres of land in Jaipur. It will be the second-largest cricket stadium in India and the third-largest in the world, he said, adding that it would seat 75,000 spectators.

Renowned Actor-Producer Ramesh Deo passes away at 93

PROMINENT FILM personality Ramesh Deo, known for playing a diverse range of roles, in Marathi and Hindi movies, passed away on Tuesday evening at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Ambani Hospital due to a heart attack. He was 93.

The actor, who is survived by his actor-wife Seema Deo as well as sons Ajinkya Deo and Abhinay Deo, had celebrated his 93rd birthday on January 30.

Deo has worked in more than 285 Hindi films, 190 Marathi films and 30 Marathi dramas. He had also produced feature films, television serials and over 250 ad films. He is best known for his role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1971 classic Anand, where he played Dr Prakash Kulkarni, alongside his actor-wife Seema Deo.

Some of his other popular hindi films include:  Aap Ki Kasam, Mere Apne, Dream Girl, among others.

Senior politician and BJP’s first torchbearer in Lok Sabha, C Janga Reddy, passes away at 86

The noted Veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Chandupatla Janga Reddy has passed away at the age of 86 due to following health issues in Hyderabad.

Reddy was a native of Warangal and a former MLA in Andhra Pradesh. He also served as Member of Parliament in the 8th Lok Sabha in the year 1984 and marked the BJP’s debut in the Lok Sabha, following Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Reddy was one of the only two BJP MPs who got elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984 in 543 Parliament constituencies. The other was A K Patel. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly in undivided Andhra Pradesh thrice.

International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation is a United Nations-sponsored annual awareness day that takes place on February 6 every year to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM). It was first held in 2003.

This year’s theme is Accelerating Investment to End Female Genital Mutilation — investing in programmes to provide services and response for those affected and those at risk and in developing and enforcing laws and fortifying institutional capacity to address eradicating female genital mutilation. Empowering girls, too, with access to education, health care and income opportunities, can accelerate the demise of this harmful practice with no known medical or health benefits.
