Alka Upadhyaya appointed as chairperson of NHAI: The Centre has appointed Alka Upadhyaya as chairperson of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Upadhyaya is a 1990-batch IAS officer of Madhya Pradesh cadre and is serving as Additional Secretary, Department of Rural Development.
Other appointments:
- The Additional Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Sanjay Bandopadhyay has been appointed as chairman of Inland Waterways Authority of India.
- Sundeep Kumar Nayak has been appointed as Director-General, National Productivity Council, and Department for Promotion of Industry & Internal Trade.
Global travel technology platform OYO announced the appointment of Rajnish Kumar, former Chairman of State Bank of India (SBI), as its strategic group advisor.
In his role, Kumar will advise Oyo’s management on short-term and long-term strategy, regulatory and stakeholder engagement, and enhancing the brand of the company globally the company said in a statement. He is currently a part of the boards of HSBC Asia Pacific, L&T infotech, Hero Motocorp, and BharatPe.
Wall Street brokerage, Goldman Sachs has estimated India’s GDP growth at 9.1 % in 2022.
After India’s economy contracted by a sharp 7% in 2020, Goldman Sachs pegged the economy to grow at 8% in 2021 and 9.1% in 2022. It earlier estimated India’s economic growth to 11.1% in the fiscal year to March 31, 2022.

The 11th edition of Exercise EKUVERIN between India and Maldives will be conducted at Kadhdhoo Island, Maldives. It will conclude on the 19th of this month.
The exercise will enhance synergy and inter-operability between the Armed Forces of both the nations conducting Counter-Terrorism and Counter-Insurgency Operations. Indian-American mathematician Nikhil Srivastava has been jointly selected for the inaugural $5,000 Ciprian Foias Prize. They were selected for the “highly original work” in Operator Theory by the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
Other winners are Adam Marcus and Daniel Spielman. The award recognizes their “highly original work” that introduced and developed methods for understanding the characteristic polynomial of matrices.

Malaysia has won the men’s final of the Asian team squash championships in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysia defeated Indian in the final by 2-1. India had lost in the summit clash before in 1981 and 2012 also. Malaysia has also won the women’s final of the Asian team squash championships defeating Hong Kong 2-1 in the final. The last time Malaysian men’s and women’s teams won was in the 2008 championships in Kuwait.
The world number one Viktor Axelsen has won the 2021 BWF World Tour Finals in men’s category in Bali, Indonesia.
The defending Olympic champion defeated Vitidsern 21-12, 21-8 in just 43 minutes to clinch the men’s singles title. It was tough in the beginning but the Danish shuttler, who was on a mission, won the first game of the men’s singles final 21-12. He closed the opener in 21 minutes. IIT Madras launches a Global Energy Consortium to boost the transformation towards a low carbon future. The Institute believes that next-generation energy challenges require a multi-domain interdisciplinary approach and strong collaboration between academia and industry, which is a key focus of this initiative.
Over 50 global faculty will work in areas such as carbon capture and storage, gas hydrates and renewable energy systems. The consortium will be launched at the IIT Madras Energy Summit to be held from December 14 to 16. These initiatives will form the core of the Global Energy Consortium.

Veteran journalist Vinod Dua (67) passed away. He was one of the pioneers in Hindi broadcast journalism, worked with Doordarshan to present the youth programme Yuva Manch in the mid-’70s and later with several other television news channels. Dua was a pioneer in broadcast Hindi journalism with stints in Doordarshan and NDTV.
He lived an inimitable life, rising from the refugee colonies of Delhi to the peak of journalistic excellence for over 42 years, always, always speaking truth to power. He was an integral part of NDTV’s journey as well. His much-loved food show ‘Zaika India Ka’ saw him crisscrossing the whole country just for the best taste.
Awards:
- In 1996, he became the first electronic media journalist to win the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Award.
- He was also awarded the Padma Shri for Journalism in 2008 by the Government of India.
- In June 2017, for his lifetime achievement in the field of journalism, Mumbai Press Club awarded him the RedInk Award, which was presented to him by Devendra Fadnavis, former Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
International Civil Aviation Day is observed every year on December 7 to recognize the importance of aviation to the social and economic development of the world. International Civil Aviation Day was established in 1994 as part of ICAO’s 50th-anniversary activities. In 1996, pursuant to an ICAO initiative and with the assistance of the Canadian Government, the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized 7 December as International Civil Aviation Day in the UN system.
The purpose of International Civil Aviation Day is to help generate and reinforce worldwide awareness of the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of States, and of the unique role of ICAO in helping States to cooperate and realize a truly global rapid transit network at the service of all mankind.
