Former IOC President Jacques Rogge passes away
Former President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge has passed away. He had spent 12 years as president of IOC, from 2001 to 2013, overseeing three summer Games and three winter Games, as well as creating the Youth Olympics. He was then succeeded by Thomas Bach. He was the 8th President of IOC.
It is with great sadness that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announces the passing of former IOC President Count Jacques Rogge. He was 79 years old.
Rogge was the eighth President of the IOC, from 2001 to 2013, after which he became Honorary President.
He was married to Anne, and leaves a son, a daughter and two grandchildren.
Rogge was an orthopedic surgeon with a degree in sports medicine.
PM Modi tops Morning Consult Global Ratings
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has the highest approval ratings among 13 world leaders as of 2 September, according to a survey conducted by the Morning Consult. Data collected by Morning Consult via its Political Intelligence unit showed Modi’s approval ratings rose to 70 per cent on 31 August, ahead of US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, among others.

The real-time polling data on elections, elected officials and voting issues are provided by Political Intelligence proprietary platform of Morning Consult. Morning Consult conducts around 11,000 daily interviews globally regarding the leadership approval and 5,000 daily interviews with registered voters in the United States regarding the presidential and congressional elections. Daily global survey data is prepared on the basis of 7-day moving average of all adults in any country with a margin of error of between +/- 1-3 percent. Surveys are weighted on the basis of age, gender, region and education breakdowns etc.
Varanasi-Chunar Cruise Service begins to boost Tourism
People and tourists travelling to Varanasi can now hop onto the day-long cruise ride on the river Ganga. A new Ro-Ro cruise service was started from Varanasi’s Ravidas Ghat to Chunar on Sunday.
Speaking on the occasion, Deepak Agarwal, Divisional Commissioner said, “One of the 2 Ro-Ro vessels of state’s tourism department has been given to vendor under PPE model. We’re hoping services of this vessel will promote tourism here:”
- This cruise service in Ganga River will run from Varanasi to historic Chunar fort in Mirzapur.
- Tourists travelling to Varanasi can now travel around 30 km long journey in River Ganga.
- Tourists can now enjoy the day-long luxury cruise ride which starts at 9 a.m. in the morning from Ravidas ghat.
- It returns back to Varanasi at around 5pm from the Chunar fort.
- State government is further planning to extend this journey till Sangam in Prayagraj.
The Chunar Fort
Chunar Fort is located in Mirzapur district of Uttar Pradesh. Chunar town is also situated below the fort. Both the places are historic places with common history and legends. It is located 23 kilometers south west of Varanasi. South-eastern part of the fort touches the rocky bank of the Ganges River. The history span of the fort is from 56 BC and between Afghan decedent Sher Shah Suri’s rule, the Mughal Empire rule, as well as the Maratha rule in 1782 to 1804. British Raj occupied this fort till 1947 when India gained independence.
International Day of Clean Air for blue skies
It was announced today that the theme of the second annual International Day of Clear Air for blue skies, facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will be “Healthy Air, Healthy Planet.”
The occasion, to be held on September 7, was established by UN resolution in 2019 at the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly, where UNEP was asked to facilitate all events moving forward. The first event, with the theme “Clean Air for All,” was held on September 7, 2020.
The International Day of Clean Air for blue skies is observed globally on September 07 to promote and facilitate actions to improve air quality. It is an UN-recognised day that aims to raise public awareness at all levels (individual, community, corporate and government) that clean air is important for health, productivity, the economy and the environment.
Theme of the day:
The 2021 theme for the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies is “Healthy Air, Healthy Planet” which emphasizes the health aspects of air pollution, especially considering the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s focus is on prioritizing the need for healthy air for all while keeping the conversation broad enough to encompass other critical issues such as climate change, human and planetary health as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. The day serves as a rallying call to action to align our efforts and claim our right to clean air. #HealthyAirHealthyPlanet.
History of the day:
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Resolution to hold an International Day of Clean Air for blue skies on December 19, 2019, during its 74th session and invited the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The inaugural edition of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies was held in 2020.
Former France Footballer Jean-Pierre Adams Passes Away
Former France footballer Jean-Pierre Adams, who had been in a coma for 39 years, has passed away. In 1982, Adams slipped into a coma following a medical error, during his routine knee surgery. He made a total of 22 appearances for the France National Football Team from 1972–1976. At club level, Adams played as a defender for Paris Saint-Germain, Nîmes and Nice. In a state of coma for more than 39 years, Jean-Pierre Adams lived in the suburbs of Nimes, his wife Bernadette watching by his side.
India and Australia join Naval exercise “AUSINDEX”
Navies from Australia and India have commenced the bilateral maritime exercise, codenamed Australia India (AUSINDEX) 2021.
The maritime exercise, which will run until 10 September, focuses on developing deeper understanding and cooperation between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).
The AUSINDEX will cover complex surface, sub-surface and air operations between ships, submarines, helicopters and Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft of the participating Navies. In 2015, the bilateral IN-RAN maritime exercise was started and the 3rd edition of the exercise was conducted in 2019 in the Bay of Bengal, included anti-submarine drills for the first time.

Govt Names Suman Sharma as New Managing Director of SECI
Suman Sharma has been appointed as Managing Director of Solar Energy Corporation of India Limited (SECI), a PSU under the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy. She has been appointed to the post at the Joint Secretary level.
The official statement said that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of the new MD of SECI, a central public sector undertaking under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
Suman Sharma is an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer of the 1990 batch.
Sharma has served as the Additional DGFT, Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Department of Commerce.

CORBEVAX Vaccine for Children
Corbevax becomes the third India-made vaccine that may be available for use in children.
Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company Biological E. Limited has been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to conduct further trials of its vaccine Corbevax on children and adolescents.
Highlights:
♦ The Drugs Controller General of India approved Biological E to perform two clinical trials of its Covid-19 vaccine candidate Corbevax.
♦ with this, the local drugmaker can start a mid-term study of the Covid-19 vaccine for children and adolescents.
♦ The Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company has received approval to perform Phase 2 & 3 clinical trials of its anti-Covid injection called Corbevax, which is suitable for children aged 5 to 18 with certain conditions.
♦ After the recommendations from the Subject Expert Committee, the permission has been approved by Biological E.
♦ The central government has paid Biological E an advance payment of 15 billion rupees for the purchase of 30 crore for the Covid-19 vaccine.
Ministry of Finance Says Grant In Aid Of Rs 13385 Crore Released To Rural Local Bodies
The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance has on Monday released an amount of Rs. 13,385.70 crore to 25 States for providing grants to the Rural Local Bodies. This Grant-in-aid is the 1st installment of Tied grants of the year 2021-22. The grants have been released as per the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission. Tied grants are released to the Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) for improving two critical services namely (a) Sanitation and maintenance of open-defecation free (ODF) status and (b) supply of drinking water, rain water harvesting and water recycling.
The Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, has on Monday released an amount of Rs 13,385.70 crore to 25 States for providing grants to the Rural Local Bodies, the ministry said in a statement.
This grant-in-aid is the first instalment of Tied grants of the year 2021-22. The grants have been released as per the recommendations of the 15th Finance Commission.
The states are required to transfer the grants to the rural local bodies within 10 working days of their receipt from the Union Government. Any delay beyond 10 working days requires the state governments to release the grants with interest.

ADB approves $150 million loan for urban poor housing project in Tamil Nadu
ADB in a release stated that the aim of the loan is to provide access to inclusive, resilient, and sustainable housing for the urban poor in TN. The agency highlighted that the southern state is vital to India’s economic growth, which is currently contributing 8.54 per cent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
The economic opportunities have boosted the rural-urban migration rate in TN which already has one of the highest urbanisation rates in India.
- Asian Development Bank has approved a loan of USD 150 million (about Rs 1,095 crore) for a sustainable housing project for the urban poor in Tamil Nadu.
- The loan amount will be used for constructing housing units in nine different locations and relocation of about 6,000 households vulnerable to natural hazards to safer locations.
India’s first bio-brick based building opened at IIT Hyderabad
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Hyderabad on Thursday inaugurated India’s first building made of bio-bricks from agro-waste. Calling it a perfect illustration of ‘Wealth from Waste’, IIT-H Director BS Murthy said the institute will submit a proposal to the Ministry of Agriculture to promote its wider adoption by the rural community.
