Andhra government launched the ‘Swechha’ programme

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has launched the ‘Swechha’ program to tackle the stigma attached to menstruation, prioritize female personal hygiene, and encourage a healthy dialogue of information. ‘Swechha’ (meaning freedom) is intended to ensure affordable access to health and menstrual hygiene in adolescent girls and women.

Under the initiative, the state government will provide sanitary napkins at government educational institutions free of cost. Ten sanitary napkins will be given every month to about 10 lakh adolescent girls studying from 7th-12th grades in all government schools and intermediate colleges across the state. A total of 120 napkins per year is allotted to every female student, even during summer vacations, the students will be supplied with their quota before they leave school.

BharatPe launches ‘buy now, pay later’ platform, postpe

Fintech Company BharatPe, announced its entry into the ‘Buy Now Pay Later’ (BNPL) category with the launch of ‘postpe’. postpe provides credit to customers. Customers can download the app from Play Store and avail interest-free credit limit of up to Rs10 lakh. The company said that postpe is not only limited to big-ticket purchases but can also be used for micro-purchases, making it the first of its kind.

About the BharatPe:

  • BharatPe aims to facilitate a loan book of $300 million on postpe in the first 12 months, for its lending partners. The fintech company added that customers can shop across offline as well as online and repay easily through EMIs.
  • All a customer has to do is scan the QR code through the postpe app and pay using credit. Users can also pay through a postpe card that will be accepted across millions of offline as well as e-commerce platforms. Cashbacks and rewards are also on offer.
Health Minister released “The State of the World’s Children 2021” report

Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya has released a report titled “The State of the World’s Children 2021: On My Mind: promoting, protecting and caring for children’s mental health” on October 5, 2021, in New Delhi. The state of World’s Children 2021 report is UNICEF’s global flagship publication. The report details the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on children’s mental health.

As per the report:

  • This is very vital to address mental health as an important aspect for creating a healthy society. Mansukh noted that teachers are very important stakeholders for addressing mental health issues along with parents and family.
  • UNICEF India Representative Dr Yasmin Ali Haque presented some key findings of the report.
  • As per UNICEF report, about 14 percent of 15 to 24-year-olds in India, accounting for 1 in 7, reported feeling depressed or they were having little interest in doing things.
The Nobel Prize in Literature 2021 announced

Novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah has been announced as the winner of the 2021 Nobel prize for literature. The Tanzanian, UK-based author won “for his uncompromising and compassionate penetration of the effects of colonialism and the fate of the refugee in the gulf between cultures and continents”. The Nobel Prize in literature is awarded by the Swedish Academy, Stockholm, Sweden.

Who is Abdulrazak Gurnah?

The Tanzanian novelist was born in Zanzibar in 1948 and has since lived in the UK and Nigeria. He writes in English, and his most famous novel is Paradise, which was shortlisted for the Booker prize in 1994. Gurnah currently lives in the UK and taught English Literature at the University of Kent. Until recently, he was Professor of English and Postcolonial Literatures at the University of Kent, Canterbury, and has published ten novels and a number of short stories.

India’s first e-fish market App Fishwaale launched in Assam

An application, stated to be India’s first e-fish market app, was launched in Assam by state Fisheries Minister Parimal Suklabaidya. Table size fish such as bhangon, mrigal and rohu, and freshwater and seawater frozen fish (icebox) will be available coupled with dry fish packets, dry fish raw, fish pickles, and processed fish products.

The app, “Fishwaale”, which will provide the one-stop solution for aquaculture, will help both buyers and sellers to place orders and sell fish, aquaculture equipment and medicine, fish feed and fish seed online, the minister said.

Developed by Aqua Blue Global Aquaculture Solutions Pvt. Ltd. in collaboration with the fisheries department at a function held at Sri Madhabdev Bhawan auditorium, the minister called the app “a one-stop solution for aquaculture” that will help both the buyers and sellers. This platform will help the fish farming community get a reasonable price for their produce and lead to the elimination of middlemen.

Germany unveils Euro 2024 championship logo

Germany has unveiled the logo for soccer’s 2024 European Championship during a ceremony with a light show in the stadium that will hold the final. Some guests and media were invited to Berlin’s Olympiastadion for the UEFA launch, though no fans were present on a damp evening in the German capital. The logo features an outline of the Henri Delaunay Cup — the bulbous tournament trophy — set on a coloured oval outline that resembles the Olympiastadion’s roof.

 It features colours from the flags of UEFA’s 55 member nations, set in 24 slices around the trophy to represent the 24 teams that will ultimately qualify for the tournament in Germany.

Logos for each of the 10 host cities; Berlin, Cologne, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart were also presented. The tournament is due to be played in June and July 2024 with the match schedule to be confirmed next year.

Wada Kolam Rice (Zini Rice) from Maharashtra’s Palghar gets GI Tag

A variety of rice widely grown in Wada in the Palghar district of Maharashtra has been given a ‘Geographical Indication’ (GI) tag, which means the product now gets a unique identity as well as a wider market base. Divisional agriculture joint director Ankush Mane said Wada Kolam rice got the GI tag in a meeting held in Mumbai on September 29.

The traditional variety of Wada Kolam rice, also known as Zini or Jhini rice, is grown in the Wada tehsil of Palghar district in Maharashtra.

The grain is off-white in colour, with price ranging between Rs 60-70 per kilogram in domestic markets, and has a sizable demand overseas as well.

World Bank Projects Indian GDP to grow at 8.3% in FY22

The World Bank has estimated India’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the current fiscal year 2021-22 to grow by 8.3% in its latest economic update for South Asia. World Bank on June 8 projected India’s economy to grow at 8.3 percent in 2021. Earlier, the World Bank had estimated the Indian economy to grow at a pace of 10.1 percent in FY 2021-22.

The GDP growth projection for India in three fiscal years as per World Bank is as follows:

  • 2021-22 (FY22) – 8.3%
  • 2022-23 (FY23) – 7.5%
  • 2023-24 (FY24) – 6.5%.
Economist Gandhi: The Roots and the Relevance of the Political Economy of the Mahatma by Jaithirth Rao

Indian Entrepreneur and writer Jaithirth Rao, popularly known as Jerry Rao, has come out with a book on  Mahatma Gandhi titled  “Economist Gandhi: The Roots and the Relevance of the Political Economy of the Mahatma” examines Mahatma Gandhi’s economic philosophy, shedding light on why he needs to be looked at as a management guru and explains his positive approach toward business.

The book has been published by the Penguin Random House India.

World Investor Week 2021: October 04-10

The World Investor Week (WIW) is a global campaign promoted by the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection and highlight the various initiatives of securities regulators in these two critical areas. During October 4-10, 2021, the Securities and Exchange Commission (national coordinator), Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, National Futures Association, North American Securities Administrators Association, and supporters are working together with interested government agencies, localities, and organizations to promote World Investor Week 2021 (WIW 2021) and its goals in the United States.

In 2021, the 5th annual WIW is being observed between October 04 and October 10, 2021.
