Geetanjali Shree’s novel ‘Tomb of Sand’ becomes first Hindi novel to get shortlisted for International Booker Prize

Author Geetanjali Shree’s novel Tomb of Sand on Thursday became the first Hindi language work of fiction to be shortlisted for the International Booker Prize.

The book which has been translated into English by Daisy Rockwell and described by the judges as a “loud and irresistible novel”, will be pit against five other titles from around the world for the prestigious 50,000 pounds literary prize, which is split evenly between the author and translator.

A photograph by Canadian photographer Amber Bracken titled “Kamloops Residential School” has won the 2022 World Press Photo of the Year award. An image of dresses draped on crosses near Kamloops in Canada, where remains of 215 children were found last year, won the 2022 World Press Photo of the Year award. The image was captured by Amber Bracken, who’s the fifth female World Press Photo of the Year winner. It commemorates the children who died at the Kamloops Indian Residential School.

The photo shows children’s clothing hung on crosses commemorating the more than two hundred children who died of maltreatment, neglect and disease at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. The annual World Press Photo of the Year award is part of the World Press Photo Awards, organized by the Dutch foundation World Press Photo.

The award rewards photographers for the best single exposure pictures contributing to the past year of visual journalism.

SEBI Sets up two separate panels to review ownership norms of Sponsor and Trustees

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has set up two separate expert groups to examine the roles, eligibility criteria and functions of sponsors and trustees at asset management companies (AMCs)

A sponsor is like a promoter who brings in the capital for setting up an AMC, while a trustee plays a supervisory role and is tasked with protecting investors interest. The working group on Sponsors will be chaired by Balasubramanian, MD & CEO, Aditya Birla Sun Life AMC. The working group on MF trustees will be chaired by Manoj Vaish, Independent Trustee, Mirae MF.

DRDO successfully flight-tests Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) technology off Odisha coast

Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight tested Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) booster at the Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha on April 08, 2022. The test successfully demonstrated the reliable functioning of all critical components involved in the complex missile system and met all the mission objectives.

The SFDR-based propulsion enables the missile to intercept aerial threats at very long range at supersonic speeds. It has an extremely high projected range of 350 km.

The SFDR has been developed by Defence Research and Development Laboratory, Hyderabad in collaboration with other DRDO laboratories such as Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Pune.

The Reserve Bank of India conducted its first Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting for 2022-23 between April 6- 8, 2022. 

On the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) at its meeting today (April 8, 2022) decided to: keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 4.0 per cent.

The MPC decided to continue with the accommodative stance. RBI has projected the real GDP growth for 2022-23 at 7.2 per cent. The next meeting of the MPC is scheduled during June 6-8, 2022.

RBI imposes penalties of Rs 93 lakh each on Axis and IDBI Bank

Reserve Bank of India on Friday said it has imposed a penalty of Rs 93 lakh on Axis Bank for various violations, including those related to KYC guidelines. The central bank has also slapped a fine of Rs 93 lakh on IDBI Bank.

A monetary penalty of Rs 93 lakh has been imposed on Axis Bank for violating certain provisions on loans and advances, Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines and ‘levy of penal charges non-maintenance of minimum balances in savings bank accounts.

The IDBI Bank has been slapped a fine of Rs 93 lakh for non-compliance of directions on ‘frauds – classification and reporting by commercial banks and select financial institutions’, violating norms on ‘strengthening the controls of payment ecosystem between sponsor banks and corporate customers like SCBs/UCBs’ and ‘cyber security framework.’

Cabinet approves extension of Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) till March 2023

The Union Cabinet on Friday approved continuation of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) till March 2023, according to an official statement.  A total budget expenditure of more than Rs 2000 crore has been allocated for 2022-23.

The objectives of the AIM are to create and promote an ecosystem of innovation and entrepreneurship across the country via interventions at school, university, research institutions, MSME and industry levels. The mission has been set up under the NITI Aayog, in accordance with the finance minister’s declaration in the 2015 Budget speech.

AAI launches ‘AVSAR’ Scheme to provide platform to SHGs for promotion of local artisans and products

The Airport Authority of India (AAI) has launched an initiative “AVSAR” to encourage the talent of women, artisans and craftsmen and provide them with the right opportunities. AVSAR stands for ‘Airport as Venue for Skilled Artisans Of The Region’.

Under AVSAR initiative, AAI will allocate space to Self Help Groups (SHGs) at its airports for selling/showcasing the self-made products of their region. Under this scheme, an area of 100-200 square feet has been earmarked at each AAI operated airport. The space will be allotted to the self- help groups, turn on turn basis, for a duration of 15 days.

Ministry of I&B Constitutes Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) Promotion Task Force, headed by Secretary, MoI&B

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Friday announced that in pursuance of the announcement made in the Union Budget 2022-23, an Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming and Comics (AVGC) promotion task force has been constituted to promote the AVGC sector in the country under the aegis of Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The AVGC promotion task force shall be headed by secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and will have secretaries of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. The AVGC promotion task force also includes State Governments of Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana; heads of education bodies such as All India Council of Technical Education, National Council of Educational Research and Training  and representatives of industry bodies-MESC, FICCI and CII.

The CRPF celebrates CRPF Valour Day on 9th April to commemorate the defense of the Sardar post in the Rann of Kutch of Gujrat. On the intervening night of 8th and 9th April 1965, around 3500 men of the 51st Infantry of the Pakistani Army moved towards India at Sardar Post. 2022 marks 57th CRPF Valour Day.

It was on this day in 1965, a small contingent of CRPF created history by defeating an invading Pakistani army, several time larger, at the Sardar Post located in the Rann of Kutch, Gujarat. The CRPF men eliminated 34 Pakistani soldiers and captured four alive. In the conflict, CRPF lost six personnel who had attained martyrdom.

India’s agriculture exports cross $50 billion in 2021-22

Exports of Indian agricultural products have crossed a mark of $50 billion for 2021-22 with an increase of 20 per cent.

The export of wheat is almost quadrupled from $568 million in 2020-21 to $2.12 billion in 2021-22.

The growth in exports has been mostly achieved on account of an increase in shipments of rice, marine products, sugar, buffalo meat, raw cotton and wheat.

India has captured nearly 50 per cent of the world market for rice.

On 8th April 2022, Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has completed its seven years. The scheme was launched in 2015 by PM Modi for providing financial support of up to 10 Lakh rupees to non-corporate, non-farm small, or micro-enterprises.

More than 34 crores 42 lakh loans for an amount of 18.60 lakh crore rupees have been sanctioned since the launch of the scheme.

68% of the total number of loans have been sanctioned to Women Entrepreneurs.

The United States of America (USA) Senate has confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first black woman in US Supreme Court.

The US Senate has voted 53 to 47 to confirm her appointment. Jackson is the third black judge after Thurgood Marshall and Clarence Thomas, and the sixth woman. She is the second-youngest member of the court after Judge Barrett, 50. Kamala Harris is also the first Black woman Vice-President in the USA.
