Assamese Poet Nilmani Phookan and Damodar Mauzo, a Konkani novelist, received the 56th and 57th Jnanpith Awards for their contributions to Indian literature. The 56th Jnanpith Award went to eminent Assamese poet Nilmani Phookan Jr., while the 57th Jnanpith Award went to Konkani novelist Damodar Mauzo. The country’s highest literary award, the Jnanpith is bestowed on writers for “their outstanding contribution to literature”. Jnanpith Award is a literary award presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith organization to Indian writers every year. Jnanpith Award was instituted in 1961 and is bestowed only on the Indian writers who write within the Indian languages that are included within the 8th schedule of the Constitution of India.
National Commission for Women (NCW) has launched a pan-India capacity building programme, ‘She is a Changemaker’ for women representatives at all levels, gram panchayats to parliament members and political workers including office bearers of National/State political parties. “She is a Changemaker” program was launched for women in Politics. The Launch of training programs for the “She is a Changemaker” program in collaboration with Rhambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini happened in Thane, Maharashtra. Programs were launched by the Chairperson of NCW, Rekha Sharma.
About the programme:
The official launch of training programmes under the ‘She is a Changemaker’ series was held in collaboration with Rhambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini, Thane, and Maharashtra. The three-day capacity building programme for ‘Women in Municipal Corporation’ will be organised from 7th to 9th December. The capacity building programme will be undertaken in association with region-wise training institutes with an objective to undertake capacity building of women political leaders and improve their decision making and communication skills including, oration, writing, etc.
The Board of directors of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank appointed Ittira Davis In form of MD & CEO Of the bank Davis has been appointed as MD and CEO for a period of 3 years from the date of approval of RBI or for such other period as may be approved by RBI. Davis was the MD and CEO of Ujjivan Financial Services Limited from July 2018 from where he resigned in 2021.
About the Ittira Davis:
- Davis has a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management-Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and is an international banker with over 40 years of banking experience. He worked extensively in India, the Middle East and Europe.
- He was with the Europe Arab Bank from July 2008 to October 2012 initially as the Managing Director – Corporate and Institutional Banking and then as an Executive Director.
- Davis has also previously worked with Citibank in India and the Arab Bank Group in the Middle East and has been associated with Ujjivan since 2015. He played a pivotal role in its transition into a Small Finance Bank.
India successfully test-fired Short Range Surface to Air Missile from integrated test range, Chandipur, Odisha. Defense Research and Development Organisation, DRDO said, the launch was conducted from a vertical launcher against an electronic target at a very low altitude.
The first trial was conducted on the 22nd of February this year and this is a confirmatory trial to prove the consistent performance of the configuration and integrated operation.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has congratulated DRDO, the Indian Navy, and the industry for the successful flight test.
Sanket Mahadev Sargar yesterday won the gold medal in the Men’s 55kg snatch category at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 in Tashkent. For the top-podium finish, the Indian lifted the weight of 113kg. With this lift, Sargar also created the new snatch national record.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2021 is currently being held concurrently in Tashkent along with World Weightlifting Championships 2021 from December 7 to 17.
Indian-origin physician Anil Menon (45) has been selected by NASA along with nine others to be astronauts for future missions.
Menon, 45, was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Ukrainian and Indian immigrants.
Menon was SpaceX’s first flight surgeon, helping to launch the company’s first humans to space during Nasa’s SpaceX Demo-2 mission. Till now, Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma is the only Indian citizen to travel in space. Earlier, Sirisha Bandla in July became the third Indian-origin woman to fly into space after Kalpana Chawla and Sunita Williams.
India has become the top food exporter to the 22-nation League of Arab States for the first time in 15 years, replacing Brazil. A Reuters report from Sao Paulo said India accounted for 8.25% of the total agribusiness products imported by the 22 Arab League members last year, higher than Brazil’s 8.15%, ending a 15-year advantage for Brazil.
Now, India is capable of shipping fruits, vegetables, sugar, grains, and meat to the Arab nations in about a week’s time.
Reliance Industries has signed a $736 million green loan agreement with 5 banks to fund its acquisition of REC Solar Holdings.
Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, DBS Bank, Credit Agricole, HSBC, and MUFG were among the bankers to this rare facility, which is being used for acquisition financing for the first time.
Reliance had announced the acquisition of 100% shareholding of REC Solar from China National Blue star for $771 million. Singapore-incorporated REC Solar is the borrower on the loan, while Reliance New Energy Solar, a wholly-owned subsidiary of RIL is the guarantor.
Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB), a regional rural bank headquartered in Dharwad, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Liberty General Insurance for selling general insurance products through 629 branches of KVGB. The company will provide a variety of general health insurance products to the customers with reasonably affordable cost.
The bank has consistently enhanced its portfolio to meet the diverse financial needs of its customers and alliance in this regard is a step in that direction.
Microsoft launched a cybersecurity skilling programme that aims to skill over one lakh learners by 2022 as part of efforts to address the skills gap and empower India’s workforce for a career in digital security. The program is designed to provide a hands-on experience to learners in the fundamentals of security, compliance and identity.
Microsoft will conduct these courses along with its strategic consortium of partners, including Cloudthat, Koenig, RPS, and Synergetics Learning.
The Tamil Nadu government has notified the Kazhuveli swamp/wetland in Vanur and Marakkanam taluks of Villupuram district as Kazhuveli Wetland Birds Sanctuary – 16th bird sanctuary in the State. The declaration was made under subsection (1) of section 18 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. The Kazhuveli wetlands are referred to as the 2nd largest Brackish Water Lake in South India, only after Pulicat lake.
About Kazhuveli Bird Sanctuary:
It covers 5,151.60 hectares of land in Vanur taluk and 3,027.25 hectares in Marakkanam taluks. The sanctuary lies adjacent to the Bay of Bengal along the East coast of Tamil Nadu.
Kazhuveli is a wetland of international importance that is spread over 670 square km in the east coast of Tamil Nadu. Note- Southern part of the wetland was declared reserved land in the year 2001. The Sanctuary covers 13 villages in the Villupuram district. The place is home to a diverse species of flora and fauna, giving accommodation to long-distance migrant birds from Central Asia and Siberia.
The Reserve Bank of India has imposed several restrictions on Nagar Urban Co-operative Bank Ltd, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, including a cap of Rs 10,000 on withdrawals for customers in the wake of deterioration of its financial position. RBI has issued the directions in the exercise of powers vested in it under subsection (1) of Section 35 A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 for 6 months.
The bank shall not, without prior approval of RBI, grant or renew any loans and advances, make any investment, incur any liability, disburse any payment, transfer or otherwise dispose of any of its properties or assets. The bank will continue to undertake banking business with restrictions till its financial position improves.
Eileen Ash, the oldest-ever Test cricketer, has died at the age of 110.
Ash, nee Whelan, made her Test debut for England against Australia in 1937 and played seven Tests in total, taking 10 wickets at an average of 23.00 with her right-arm seam bowling before her retirement in 1949.
Eileen Ash was given the honour of ringing the bell at Lord’s in the Finals of the 2017 ICC Women’s World Cup where the host, England has crowned the champions after beating India in a thrilling Finals.
The International Day of Commemoration and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and of the Prevention of this Crime is marked annually on 9 December.
Purpose: It is observed to raise awareness about genocide and the role of the United Nations’ Genocide Convention in preventing it.
Significance of the day:
This year marks the 73rd anniversary of the Convention, which establishes the duty of governments and states to prevent crimes of genocide and punish those who are involved in the heinous crime. The Convention signifies the international community’s commitment to “never again” and provides the first international legal definition of “genocide,” widely adopted at national and international levels. It also establishes a duty for State Parties to prevent and punish the crime of genocide.
International Anti-Corruption Day is observed annually on December 9 to raise awareness on the importance of getting rid of corruption. Corruption affects every area in our society and preventing corruption unlocks progress towards sustainable development goals.
The day is observed since the passage of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption on 31 October 2003. The 2021 International Anti-Corruption Day seeks to highlight the rights and responsibilities of everyone – including States, Government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officers, media representatives, the private sector, civil society, academia, the public and youth – in tackling corruption. The theme of International Anti-Corruption Day 2021: “Your right, your role: say no to corruption”.
History of the day:
On 31 October 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General designate the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as secretariat for the Convention’s Conference of States Parties (resolution 58/4). The Assembly also designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it. The Convention entered into force in December 2005.
