Shipping Minister Sarbanand Sonowal launches ‘MyPortApp’ for digital monitoring of port operations

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched a port mobile application called ‘MyPortApp’ in Kolkata. The App is aimed at promoting transparency and easy access to port-related information.

Ministry of Ports, Shipping and waterways in a Statement said, targeted towards Port users for availing various Port services, the app includes all port details digitally and monitors operations virtually.

The App will provide all details regarding port in India and also monitor operations virtually.

IFSCA launches Global FinTech Hackathon Series ‘I-Sprint’21’

International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) and GIFT City launched I-Sprint’21, the global FinTech Hackathon Series of IFSCA on 7th October 2021 at 11.30 AM IST. The first Sprint of the series is “Sprint01: BankTech”, which focuses on FinTechs for the Banking sector.

Sprint01: BankTech is organised jointly by IFSCA and GIFT city in collaboration with NITI Aayog.

The Partners to the Hackathon are ICICI Bank, HSBC Bank, iCreate, Zone Startups, and Invest-India. The hackathon will be conducted virtually and is open for all eligible FinTechs from across the Globe. The Price money for this hackathon is Rs 24 lakh.

Maharashtra Government launches ‘Mission Kavach Kundal’

Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Thursday announced Mission Kavach Kundal from October 8-14 to carry out 15 lakh Covid-19 vaccinations daily.

The week-long drive has been organised from October 08 to 14 October 2021. The drive is in line with the Centre’s target of reaching the 100 crore vaccination mark till 15 October 2021.

RBI keeps Repo Rate unchanged at 4%

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) on Friday kept the repo rate unchanged at 4 percent and the reverse repo rate at 3.35 percent, maintaining an accommodative stance on part of the central bank even as the economy is showing signs of recovery after the second coronavirus disease (Covid-19) wave.

As a result, the remaining rates are also unchanged and are mentioned below:

The MPC also decided to continue with the accommodative stance.

RBI has retained the projection for real GDP growth at 9.5 percent in 2021-22.

The decisions were announced at the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) held between October 6-8, 2021. The next MPC meet will be held between December 6 to 8, 2021

Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank bags two national awards

Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) sponsored by Canara Bank Bank has bagged two awards from Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) for significant enrolment under Atal Pension Yojana (APY). KVGB Chairman P. Gopi Krishna received awards from PFRDA Chairman Supratim Bandopadhyay.

KVGB is playing a pivotal role in implementing all three social security schemes (PMJJBY, PMSBY, and APY) launched by the Central government. KVGB has a business turnover of ₹28,410 crores with a clientele base of nearly 90 lakh in nine districts – Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada – of Karnataka.

Indian hockey players sweep FIH Stars Awards

Indian hockey players swept the 2020-21 edition of the FIH Stars Awards, the international hockey federation (FIH) announced. The winners were decided based on an online poll conducted from August 23 to September 15 which saw national associations, represented by their respective national captains and coaches, players, media, and hockey fans cast their votes.

Votes from national associations counted for 50 percent of the overall result, while fans and players (25%) as well as media (25%), accounted for the other half.

Indian hockey teams enjoyed phenomenal success during the 2020-21 season with the men’s team putting up commanding performances in the handful of matches they played in the FIH Pro League and eventually clinching the bronze medal at Tokyo 2020.

E. R. Sheikh becomes first Director-General of the Ordnance Directorate

E.R. Sheikh has assumed charge as first Director-General of the Ordnance Directorate (Co-ordination and Services). It is the successor organization of the Ordnance Factory Board (OFB).

He has contributed to the establishment of the modern production line system for the manufacture of small arms ammunition at the Ordnance Factory Varangaon. As Deputy Director General (DDG)-Propellants and Explosives, he oversaw several plant modernisation projects in explosive factories that led to enhancement in productivity, quality, and safety. He also led the successful indigenous development of the Bi-Modular Charge System (BMCS) for artillery ammunition.

India slips 6 ranks on Henley Passport Index 2021

India has slipped six places to 90 on the latest Henley Passport Index 2021 which measures and lists the world’s most travel-friendly passports each year. While Japan and Singapore have topped the rankings, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, and Yemen are at the bottom. The index covers 227 destinations and 199 passports. The index comes at a time when countries are easing travel restrictions for international visitors after almost two years since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rankings are based on the survey of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) data.

Fitch cuts India’s GDP in FY22 to 8.7% and 10% in FY23

Fitch Ratings has cut India’s economic growth forecast to 8.7% for the current fiscal but raised GDP growth projection for FY23 to 10%, saying the second COVID-19 wave delayed rather than derail the economic recovery.

In its APAC Sovereign Credit Overview, Fitch Ratings said India’s ‘BBB-/Negative’ sovereign rating “balances a still-strong medium-term growth outlook and external resilience from solid foreign- reserve buffers, against high public debt, a weak financial sector and some lagging structural factors”.

Maria Ressa and Dmitry Muratov wins 2021 Nobel Peace Prize

Filipino-American journalist Journalists Maria Ressa and Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov have won the Nobel Peace Prize for their fights to defend freedom of expression in the Philippines and Russia.

The duo has been honored “for their efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace”.

The Nobel committee called the pair “representatives of all journalists who stand up for this ideal”.

Maria Angelita Ressa is a Filipino-American journalist and author, the co-founder and CEO of Rappler, a Philippine online news website and Dmitry Andreyevich Muratov is a Russian journalist and editor-in-chief of the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta.

Ranveer Singh appointed as the brand ambassador of CoinSwitch Kuber

Anshu Malik becomes first Indian Woman to claim World Championships Silver

India will have to wait for its first woman world champion in wrestling as teenager Anshu Malik settled for a silver medal after losing her 57kg final to 2016 Olympic champion Helen Lousie Marouli in Oslo, Norway. Coming into the match after becoming India’s first-ever woman finalist at the World Championship, the 19-year old began in an aggressive fashion with positive intent. 

Till date, Indian women wrestlers Alka Tomar (2006) Geeta Phogat (2012), Babita Phogat (2012), Pooja Dhanda (2018), and Vinesh Phogat (2019) have been able to win a bronze each. Wrestler Sushil Kumar (2010) is the lone wrestler from India to win World Championship till date.

Besides this, Sarita Mor claimed her maiden medal by winning bronze in the 59 kg category at the 2021 World Wrestling Championships being held at Oslo, Norway from October 02 to 10, 2021.

World Post Day

World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 every year to mark the anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The UPU, which was started in 1874 in Switzerland, played a pivotal role in world history as a mediator of communication. The organisation became a part of the United Nations in 1948. The first World Post Day was celebrated in 1969.

The theme of 2021 World Post Day is “Innovate to recover.”

World Migratory Bird Day 2021: 09 October (Second Saturday of October)

On Second Saturday, 9 October people all over the world will be celebrating World Migratory Bird Day, a global campaign that aims to raise awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them. In 2021, the WMBBD falls on May 08, 2021, and October 09, 2021. The East Asian–Australasian Flyway Partnership has been helping by taking the lead in the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. The EAAFP Secretariat highly encourages Partners to celebrate WMBD twice a year. This day is organized by a collaborative partnership among two UN treaties namely the Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) and the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) and the Colorado-based non-profit organization, Environment for the Americas (EFTA).
