Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Eid is the month of Shawwal during which Muslims are not permitted to fast.

The fasting is observed to mark that Allah (God), gave the first chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad in 610 CE. During this period, Muslims abstain from food and water during the period between sunrise to sunset.
