Chauhan, a six-time BJP MLA from Ghosi assembly constituency in Uttar Pradesh, was administered the oath of office by Chief Justice Amreshwar Pratap Sahi of the Patna high court in the presence of chief minister Nitish Kumar and deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi at Raj Bhavan.

Several state ministers, bureaucrats and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion. A number of people from Uttar Pradesh, who were known to Chauhan, were also invited to the swearing-in ceremony.

CM Nitish welcomed the new governor by presenting him a bouquet after he was administered the oath of office. Chauhan reached Patna by a special plane on Sunday.

Chauhan’s elevation to the post of governor has stunned one and all. His predecessor Lalji Tandon was sworn in as Bihar governor on August 23, 2018. People remember him for his contributions, especially in the field of higher education.

Tandon tried to streamline the BEd entrance examination by holding a combined test. His initiatives to streamline higher education as chancellor of universities were widely appreciated. “During his stint, Raj Bhavan mainly remained a centre of academic activities,” recalled an official, preferring anonymity.

During his stint of less than a year (331 days), Tandon tried to bring financial condition of the universities on right track. His stint will also be remembered for introducing university management information system and organizing ‘shashtrarth’ (debate in Sanskrit) on the pattern of Shankaracharya and Mandan Mishra. He enthused the university heads to adopt villages and laid emphasis on holding convocations in universities on a regular basis.
