First Woman Director Dr G Hemaprabha Takes Charge at ICAR-SBI: ICAR-Sugar Cane Breeding Institute (ICAR-SBI) got its first female director in over a century of the institute’s existence.

On the suggestion of the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi, the Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare named Dr. G Hemaprabha as Director of the ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute until 2024.
About Dr. G Hemaprabha
The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute has been around for 111 years, and Dr. G Hemaprabha is its first female director. With over 34 years of research experience in sugarcane genetic improvement. She has more than 34 years of research expertise in sugarcane genetic improvement, and she has already created 27 different sugarcane varieties and registered 15 cane genetic stock.

The ICAR-Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore is the premier and one the oldest agriculture research institutes under the Indian Council of Agriculture Research. Established in 1912, it has been largely responsible for meeting the sugarcane varietal needs of the country with the dual responsibility of developing improved sugarcane varieties for the past ten decades and also supporting the sugarcane breeding programs of more than 23 Sugarcane Research Centers in India .
