India has been approved as a member of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), the inter-governmental organisation that coordinates maritime governance in the south-western Indian Ocean. The decision, as per sources, was made by the IOC council of ministers in Seychelles. India had apparently made the application to join as observer of the organisation last month.

The Indian Ocean Commission is an intergovernmental body created in 1984 to protect the interests of the Western Indian Ocean islands. It consists of Madagascar, Comoros, La Réunion (French overseas territory), Mauritius and Seychelles. The Commission has five observers — India, China, European Union (EU), Malta and International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).
