According to govt source, at least 20 Indian Army personnel were killed, including a colonel, in the violent face-off with Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley on 15 June, 2020. This unprecedented escalation at the border is the first between the two sides along the India- China border since 1975.
Key-Points:
The violent face-off between the armies of India and China in eastern Ladakh was the result of an attempt by the Chinese side to unilaterally change the status quo in the region.
Both sides suffered casualties that could have been avoided had the agreement arrived at earlier at the higher level been scrupulously followed by the Chinese side.
The violent clash between the rival troops, in which there were some Chinese casualties as well, took place near the Patrolling Point 14 in the Galwan Valley region while talks were underway to defuse the face-off in the region.
The Indian and Chinese troops apparently clashed with rods and stones, much like what had happened on the north bank of Pangong Tso (Tso means lake) on May 5 and 6, which had left several soldiers on both sides injured.
