The World Scenario:
Second only to India’s defense ministry is the U.S. Department of Defense which employs 29.1 million people, according to a Statistar infographic on employers with the largest global workforce in 2022.
The People’s Liberation Army, which does not include civilian posts in China, employs about 2.5 million people, according to the Hamburg-based firm, which specializes in market and consumer data. “The Chinese equivalent of the U.S. Department of Defense, the Central Military Commission may have as many as 6.8 million people in its employment, though that figure was not deemed sufficiently reliable to be included in this list,” the report adds.
What The SIPRI Said:
According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), the top five spenders in 2021 were the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom and Russia, together at 62 percent of spending. In 2021, total global military spending reaches US$2,113 billion.
US military spending amounted to USD 801 billion in 2021 while China, the world’s second-largest spender, allocated an estimated USD 293 billion to its military. Meanwhile, India’s military spending at US$76.6 billion is the third highest in the world, according to the SIPRI report.
What Are The Other Findings:
According to this report, no company in the world has more employees than Walmart. “According to the latest figures from the US retailer, the figure is 2.3 million. Not even the behemoth that is Amazon comes close, despite being in second place with a 1.6 million-strong workforce,” cites Statista.
