
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, reaffirmed India’s commitment to becoming a global leader in the production and use of green hydrogen. While inaugurating India’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered truck trials in New Delhi, he stressed the significant role of the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) in promoting energy independence and reducing carbon emissions. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, India has outlined ambitious targets to spearhead the green energy transition.

National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM)
• Launched with a budget of ₹19,744 crore to encourage the production, storage, and use of hydrogen.
• India has already allocated 4,12,000 TPA for Green Hydrogen production capacity.
• Approved an annual manufacturing capacity of 3 GW for electrolysers.
• Released 88 safety and scalability standards to facilitate hydrogen adoption.
• Initiated seven pilot projects in the transportation, shipping, steel, and storage sectors.
2030 Green Hydrogen Targets
• Produce 5 million metric tons (MMT) of Green Hydrogen each year.
• Set up 60-100 GW of electrolyser capacity.
• Increase renewable energy capacity for hydrogen production by 125 GW.
• Cut down 50 million metric tons of CO₂ emissions every year.
• Save ₹1 lakh crore on fossil fuel imports.
• Draw in ₹8 lakh crore in investments.
Hydrogen-Powered Truck Trials
- Marks a major shift in India’s mobility sector, reducing fossil fuel dependence.
- India is the third-largest oil consumer and fourth-largest crude oil importer.
- The first batch of three hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks will operate on:
- Faridabad–Delhi NCR route.
- Ahmedabad–Surat–Vadodara route.
