International Albinism Awareness Day is marked every year on June 13 to raise awareness of albinism and to highlight the rights of people born with hereditary disorder. Albinism is a genetically inherited, rare, non-contagious disorder that propagates itself at birth. This condition causes a lack of pigmentation or melanin in the hair, skin, and eyes, making them vulnerable to sunlight and bright light. This day is mandated to remind people of the perils of the past and the path to the future in the case of albinism and the people living with it.

In 2013, the United Nations Human Rights Council passed a resolution calling for the protection of people with albinism from assaults and prejudice. However, the International Albinism Awareness Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly on December 18, 2014, in response to the widespread discrimination faced by people with albinism around the world. In 2015, the day was finally observed for the first time.
