International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day

Every year on March 5, we celebrate International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day, which seeks to increase global awareness and understanding of disarmament issues, particularly among the youth. This day serves as an essential reminder of the threats that weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) pose and the importance of collaborative efforts to maintain global peace and security.

History of the Day

In 2021, a resolution was proposed at the UN General Assembly to establish an International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day. Then, on December 7, 2022, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution that officially designated March 5 as the annual day to observe this initiative. The first International Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness Day was celebrated on March 5, 2023.
