Indian Space Research Organization is planning its third moon mission and second attempt at a soft landing on the lunar surface, Chandrayaan-3, which is scheduled to launch in November 2020. The Chandrayaan-3 will feature a newly designed lander and rover, and as the Chandrayaan 2 orbiter was successfully able to enter lunar orbit, the new mission will not include a new orbiter.

A ‘detachable module’ with propulsion systems will carry the lander and instruments module from orbit around the Earth to the Moon. ISRO will increase the chances of Chandrayaan-3’s success by making changes and improvements based on analysis of the Vikram lander failure. ISRO has reportedly formed multiple committees — an overall panel and three sub-committees — and held at least four high-level meetings since October. The number of maneuvers around the Earth to enter the Lunar Transfer trajectory might also be reduced.
