JIMEX 2022: India and Japan Begin Joint Naval exercise at Bay of Bengal

JIMEX 2022: India and Japan Begin Joint Naval exercise at Bay of Bengal- The sixth edition of Japan-India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22) hosted by Indian Navy began in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday. JIMEX, a series of maritime exercises that commenced in January 2012, is conducted by the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force. The last edition of JIMEX was conducted in October 2021. The Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships have participated in the Japan-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise – Jimex 2022. JMSDF ships were led by R Adm Hirata Toshiyuki, Commander Escort Flotilla Four, and Indian Naval ships by R Adm Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.

JIMEX-22 aims to develop a common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through the conduct of a multitude of advanced exercises, across the entire spectrum of maritime operations. It will further enhance the cooperation and mutual confidence between the two navies. From the Indian side, three indigenously designed and built warships; Sahyadri, a multi-purpose stealth frigate and Anti-Submarine Warfare Corvettes Kadmatt and Kavaratti joined the exercise. Moreover, Guided Missile Destroyer Ranvijay, Fleet Tanker Jyoti, Offshore Patrol Vessel Sukanya, submarines, MIG 29K fighter aircraft, Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft and ship-borne helicopters also participated in the exercise. Jimex 2022 marks the 10th anniversary of JIMEX, which began in Japan in 2012 and highlights the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between both nations.
