Dressed in blue lehenga and choli to represent the nation at the competition as Indian goddess Shakti, Naaz aced to the top against 14 other international contestants.
“Winning the crown gives me the power and responsibility towards society. With such a huge responsibility, I aim to work towards bringing transgender into the mainstream. I want that everyone should accept us as we are without any discrimination,” Naaz told a portal after her win.
Born as Aizya Naaz Joshi in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar, she works actively for trans rights in India. However, during her earlier years, she had to face a lot of stigma around her sexuality. Her parents sent her to her maternal uncle’s house in Mumbai to keep distance from her. Being unable to identify with the gender she was born with, she underwent reassignment surgery in 2013, and launched her modelling career.
“When I decided to undergo a change, my own so-called friends left me. I also worked as a cabaret dancer at night in order to feed myself. I went through so much emotional distress that I tried committing suicide thrice but failed,” she was quoted as saying in an interview.
She has also been crowned as Miss Republic International Beauty Ambassador 2017 and Miss United Nationals Ambassador.
