The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday appointed Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi as Sustainable Development Goals Advocate. It is an integral role for advancing the 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development.
It is UN International Year for the Elimination of Child Labour. At present, the world is seeing the first rise in child labour in two decades. Sathyarthi’s appointment is seen as a significant step towards improving the situation.
The four newly appointed advocates are Nobel Peace Laureate Kailash Satyarthi, STEM activist Valentina Muñoz Rabanal, Microsoft President Brad Smith, and K-pop superstars BLACKPINK (South Korean girl group). With this, the UN now has a total of 16 SDG Advocates. The SDG Advocates are prominent leaders in the world who work to mobilize action to deliver the 17 SDGs by 2030, using their considerable spheres of influence. The 76th UN General Assembly will be taking place from September 21 to 30, 2021.
