Rohan Bopanna becomes oldest tennis player to win ATP Masters 1000 title

The Record of Bopanna & Ebden: Rohan Bopanna, a 43-year-old Indian tennis player, and his Australian partner Matthew Ebden have become the oldest duo to win an ATP Masters 1000 title. They defeated the top-seeded team of Wesley Koolhof and Neil Skupski in the men’s doubles final of the Indian Wells Masters 2023 tournament in California. The first set was won 6-3 by Bopanna and Ebden, but the second set was lost 2-6. However, they managed to win the match by clinching the deciding tie-breaker 10-8.

About Bopanna career win: Bopanna has now won 24 ATP titles, including five ATP Masters 1000, and has become the oldest player to win an ATP Masters 1000 title, breaking the record of Canadian Daniel Nestor, who won the 2015 Cincinnati Masters at the age of 42. This was Bopanna’s second title of the year, following his win with Ebden at the Qatar Open last month. In the semi-finals of the Indian Wells Masters, the unseeded Bopanna-Ebden pair defeated the defending champions John Isner and Jack Sock of the USA in straight sets. They also won their quarter-final match against the Canadian pair of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov in straight sets. Bopanna-Ebden received a walkover in the round of 16 and won their opening match against Rafael Matos of Brazil and David Vega Hernandez of Spain in three sets.

Bopanna, a former world No. 3 in men’s doubles, was ranked 15th in the ATP doubles rankings prior to the tournament. However, after winning the Indian Wells Masters, he has moved up to 11th in the live doubles tennis rankings.
