Ruchira Kamboj named as next Permanent Representative of India to the UN

India on Tuesday named Ruchira Kamboj, a career diplomat with expertise in multilateral organisations, as its next permanent representative to the United Nations in New York. She will succeed TS Tirumurti as the Indian ambassador to the United Nation. Ministry of External Affairs said, Ruchira Kamboj is expected to take up the assignment shortly.

During her career:

Kamboj, currently ambassador to Bhutan and an officer of the 1987 batch of the Indian Foreign Service, is expected to take up the assignment shortly, the external affairs ministry said. She began her diplomatic journey in Paris, France, where she was posted as the Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy to France from 1989-91 and learnt French there.

She has been Permanent Representative of India to UNESCO in Paris, Indian High Commissioner in South Africa, and Chief of Protocol in New Delhi. During 2011-14, she served as chief of protocol in the external affairs ministry, the first lady officer to hold this position responsible for outgoing visits by the president, vice president, Prime Minister and external affairs minister. In this capacity, she was involved in organising international summits in India. She has also served in Mauritius, Cape Town in South Africa as India’s Consul General, and at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.
