
The Government of India has given the green light for a 12.9 km ropeway project from Sonprayag to Kedarnath as part of the National Ropeways Development Programme – Parvatmala Pariyojana. This project aims to provide reliable, all-weather access to the holy Kedarnath Temple, significantly shortening travel times and promoting tourism and employment in the region.
Key Highlights
• Approval & Cost: Approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) with an estimated investment of ₹4,081.28 crore.
• Development Mode: Implemented as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate, and Transfer (DBFOT) model.
• Technology Used: Utilizes a Tri-cable Detachable Gondola (3S), which is a state-of-the-art ropeway system.
• Passenger Capacity: Capable of transporting 1,800 passengers per hour in each direction, accommodating up to 18,000 passengers daily.
• Time Reduction: Reduces travel time from 8-9 hours down to just 36 minutes.
