The marked price of an article is Rs. 300. It is sold for Rs. 177.84 after giving three successive discounts of 20%, x% and 5%. What is value of x ?

A.      22

B.      18

C.      24

D.      15

Sol:

Given:

Marked price = Rs.300

Three discounts = 20%, x% and 5%

Selling price = Rs.177.84

Calculation:

Discounted price = 300 – 177.84 = Rs.122.16

Single equivalent discount = 100 – 100 × (100 – 20)/100 × (100 – x)/100 × (100 – 5)/100

= 100 – 100 × 80/100 × (100 – x)/100 × 95/100

= 100 – 76 + 0.76x

= 24 + 0.76x

Then,

122.16 = 300 × (24 + 0.76x)/100

0.76x = 16.72

x = 22

The value of x is 22.
