Uttar Pradesh State government has announced to piped water
The Uttar Pradesh State government has announced piped water for every rural home in the state within two years. The Yogi Adityanath-led government has already begun its work on the piped water programme.
The State has planned to divide Jal Nigam’s work into urban and rural areas for better implementation. The works are carried out under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Other measures:
The State govt. has warned concerned officials of serious consequences including jail, if they fail to do their job.
It has also asked the district magistrates (DMs) to fix accountability of gram panchayats for repairing hand pumps and ensuring the supply of drinking water.
District magistrates will address through a video conference. Complaints will received during a review of the Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam.
Works on ponds and river:khet-talab yojana: Through khet-talab yojana, the state government is working on village ponds.
Namami Gange project: On implementation of Namami Gange project, has planned to work in the 25 district situated near the bank of river Ganga.
About Jal Nigam:
In 1927, Public Health Engineering Department was created to provide drinking water supply and sewerage facilities in Uttar Pradesh. It was renamed as Local Self Government Engineering Department (LSGED) in 1946.
It was converted to Uttar Pradesh Jal Nigam through Uttar Pradesh Water Supply and Sewerage ACT, 1975 (ACT no-43, 1975) in 1975. As per the act, Jal Nigam has jurisdiction over whole Uttar Pradesh, except the Cantonment Area.
The State govt. created the corporation for the development and regulation of water supply & sewerage services and for related matters.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan:
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) (Clean India Mission) is a campaign in India for the period 2014 to 2019. It was launched on 2 October 2014 by PM Narendra Modi. The mission aims to clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of India’s cities, towns, and rural areas. It also aims to achieve an open-defecation free (ODF) India by 2 October 2019.
