Key-Points

Van Mahotsav is an annual one week tree planting festival in India.

It was started in 1950 by K. M. Munshi (1887 – 1971), the then Union Minister for Agriculture and Food to create an enthusiasm in the mind of the populace for the conservation of forests and planting of trees.

By encouraging Indians to support tree planting and tending, festival organizers hope to create more forest in the country.

It would provide alternative fuels, increasing production of food resources, creating shelter-belts around fields to increase productivity, provide food and shade for cattle, offer shade and decorative landscapes, reducing drought and helping to prevent soil erosion.
