Explanation: The BASIC countries include South Africa, India, Brazil and China – four large newly industrialized countries. These were formed by an agreement on 28 November 2009. Why in the News? During the global climate meet (COP26) in Glasgow, the BASIC group of countries represented by Bhupender Yadav, India’s environment minister, highlighted a road map for the delivery of the promised $100 billion climate finance support for developing countries. He also mentioned a guide for a carbon market mechanism that helps the private sector fight against climate change.
