World Fisheries Day 2022: World Fisheries Day is observed every year on November 21. This day is dedicated to highlighting the critical importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and to ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world. World Fisheries Day seeks to secure the interests and growth and development of fishing communities across the globe while finding solutions to the increasingly interconnected problems the world faces to pursue sustainable models of our marine ecosystems.

World Fisheries Day: Significance

Fisheries sector play an important role in the socio-economic development of fisherfolk or coastal community in our world. The sector has been recognized as a powerful income and employment generator as it stimulates growth of a number of subsidiary industries, and is a source of cheap and nutritious food besides being a foreign exchange earner. Most importantly, it is a source of livelihood for a large part of the economically backward population of our world. Hence it is very important to tackle the challenges faced by this industry for the development of our world and to address these problems only we have World Fisheries Day!

History of Fisheries Day:

On November 21, 2015, the first World Fisheries Day was observed. The International Fishermen’s Organization’s grand opening took place in New Delhi on the same day. A forum for the World Fisheries consortium was established around 1997 and was famously called WFF (World Fisheries Forum). Under this forum, several participants across the world actively took part in it. Around 18 countries signed a global consensus document that marked the standardization of practices. The memories of WFF in 1997 lay etched in the pages of history because it wrote a new form of working pattern of the fisherfolk community.
