Every year, August 13 is observed as World Organ Donation Day. The sole motto of celebrating this day is to inspire people to step up and donate organs to the ones who require them. Organ donation can be described as a process wherein an organ is transferred from the body of the donor (the one who is giving the organ) to the recipient (the one who requires the organ). Moreover, the donor can be either a living or deceased as there are two types of organ donation- live and cadaver (deceased donation). The decision to donate organs is a life-altering for people in dire need of transplants. In view of it, Global hospital conducted a unique felicitation program to honour families who consented for organ donation.
Dr Prashant Borade, Head of Critical Care, Global Hospital, Parel, said, “World Organ Donation Day is observed every year on August 13, and due to a lack of awareness regarding organ donation, there are myths and fears in peoples’ mind regarding it. It is my belief that we must pledge organs and encourage individuals and families in our neighborhood to do the same. In this year till date, families of four brain stem death certified patients consented for organ donation and helped many patients with the gift of life. This initiative has been taken by the hospital to felicitate those families who in time of profound personal grief have stepped up to give a gift of life to others through organ donation.”
Dr Vivek Talaulikar, CEO of the hospital, highlighted, “Organ donation is the need of the hour as one organ donor can save up to nine lives. The objective of this day is to motivate people to pledge to donate organs after death and spread awareness about the importance of organ donation. The organs from a deceased donor can help many other patients start the second innings of their life.”
He added, “Global Hospital has always remained at the forefront of healthcare technologies and aims to come up with the best and latest clinical advancements for those who require treatment. The hospital is determined to spread awareness about major health ailments by organizing camps, drives and undertaking various unique initiatives and programs. This initiative too is a part of the series and will help people to understand the importance of organ donation.”
