Held every year on 21 March, World Poetry Day celebrates one of humanity’s most treasured forms of cultural and linguistic expression and identity.
The day was declared by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1999.
The day was proposed and adopted by UNESCO in 1999, on the occasion of its 30th General Conference held in Paris to “give fresh recognition and impetus to national, regional and international poetry movements. With the aim of supporting linguistic diversity through poetic expression and increasing the opportunity for endangered languages to be heard.
