Mission for Soil Health Card

The Agriculture Department of Tamil Nadu reported that around 3,10,464 families have been covered under the Mission for Soil Health Card across the Cuddalore district of Tamil Nadu. In an effort aimed at ensuring quality control of the soil fertility, validation and quality control, work has begun under the mission from April in districts of Tamil Nadu.

The Department of Agriculture has advised farmers to purchase the required chemical fertilizers from the approved retailers based on the recommendation of soil health card so that they can use the fertilizers in a balanced manner, besides reducing the cost of cultivation.

Details in the Card:

Details such as nature of the soil, level of nutrients, salinity, alkalinity, acidity, calcium, chances of soil health reclamation, potential crops and recommendation on the levels of macro, micronutrients, and biofertilizer will be analyzed and printed in the cards.

Soil Health Card Scheme:

Soil Health Card Scheme is a scheme launched by the Ministry of Agriculture on 19 February 2015.

The aim to issue soil cards to farmers which will carry crop-wise recommendations of nutrients and fertilizers required for the individual farms to help farmers to improve productivity through judicious use of inputs. All soil samples are to be tested in various soil testing labs across the country.

The scheme will be implemented on 50:50 sharing pattern between the Centre and State Governments.

The objective of the scheme:

• To improve soil quality and profitability of farmers.

• Employment generation for rural youth.

• To update information on soil analysis.

• To provide soil testing facilities to farmers at their doorstep.
