World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is an annual global campaign that aims to raise awareness about the importance of migratory birds and their conservation. The campaign emphasises migratory birds' ecological importance, the problems they face, and the need to take action to conserve them. Migratory birds play an important part in preserving nature's balance and the proper functioning of ecosystems all around the world. They also provide important cultural and economic benefits to many communities. WMBD provides an opportunity for individuals, organizations, and governments to come together and take action to protect migratory birds and their habitats.

It encourages people to learn more about migratory birds, their migration routes, and the challenges they face. By raising awareness and taking action to protect migratory birds, we can help to ensure their survival for generations to come.

World Migratory Bird Day- History

The AEWA and CMS Secretariats jointly inaugurated World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) in 2006. It evolved from the United States' International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD) and Africa's, Europe's, and portions of Asia's Migratory Waterbird Days (MWD). The first WMBD took place in Kenya in 2006 and has since been celebrated annually, gaining increasing popularity. The campaign is organized from Bonn, Germany, and in 2018, IMBD and WMBD merged under the unified name “World Migratory Bird Day” to strengthen global recognition and conservation efforts. Major events occur twice a year in May and October. The campaign has effectively raised awareness and promoted the protection of migratory birds and their habitats.
