International Yoga Day History

Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea of a special yoga day in his remarks during the 69th session of the UN General Assembly in 2014. The United Nations' 193 members unanimously decided on December 11 to celebrate the International Day of Yoga on June 21. The inaugural celebration occurred on June 21, 2015. Millions of people around the world participated in yoga events on this day, and the event was widely covered by the media. Since then, International Yoga Day has become a global phenomenon, and it is now celebrated in over 190 countries.
