Mega Virtual Summit on Artificial Intelligence

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and NITI Aayog organized a Mega Virtual Summit on Artificial Intelligence (AI), RAISE 2020- ‘Responsible AI for Social Empowerment 2020’. RAISE 2020 will be a global meeting of minds to exchange ideas and chart a course for using AI for social transformation, inclusion and empowerment in areas like Healthcare, Agriculture, Education and Smart Mobility, among other sectors.

Important Points:

RAISE 2020 is a first of its kind, global meeting of minds on Artificial Intelligence to drive India's vision and roadmap for social transformation, inclusion and empowerment through responsible AI.

Organized by Government of India along with Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the event will witness robust participation from global industry leaders, key opinion makers, Government representatives and academia.

The RAISE 2020 Summit also featured some of the most exciting startups working in Artificial Intelligence-related fields.

Startups chosen through the AI Solution Challenge showcased their solutions in the AI Startup Pitch fest scheduled on 6th Oct 2020.

This is part of Government of India’s continuing support to tech entrepreneurs and startups by providing exposure, recognition and guidance.

India and AI

The Indian government and industry leaders are exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) can be applied to help transform the economy. Industry analysts predict that AI could add up to 957 billion USD to India’s economy by 2035.

India needs to scale up its core strengths of democracy, preferential market access, and digital infrastructure, backed by ICT and AI research, in order to create an environment conducive for global players to invest and contribute towards inclusive development through AI.

India has launched National AI Strategy and National AI Portal and has also started leveraging AI across various sectors such as education, agriculture, healthcare, e-commerce, finance, telecommunications, etc. Bringing all the data from government applications, services, and mission mode projects together under a single umbrella will make it possible for companies to utilize this vast unutilized source of data for their product development.

India joined the 'Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI)' as a founding member to support the responsible and human-centric development and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Concerns on Artificial Intelligence:

AI automates routine tasks, and reduces human error. It learns from data, which means any inaccuracies in the data will be reflected in results. Clever use of AI can surely make our lives easier. But before we hand over all control to robots, let's first understand how smart technology really is, and what its limitations are.

The main concern that is related to AI is the potential misuse of this technology. A malicious group or a hacker can use AI as a medium to accomplish various tasks and inflict damage to the public like for example, Deep Fakes, Social Manipulation, etc. Therefore, it is important to make AI responsible so that the misuse of AI doesn't harm the society.
