The 27-member European Union has joined India's Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) initiative.

What is CDRI initiative?

The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) initiative is an international collaborative platform involving the public and private sector, aiming to promote the resilience of new and existing infrastructure systems to climate and disaster risks in support of sustainable development. CDRI was launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UN Climate Change Summit.

The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) initiative aims to promote resilience of new and existing infrastructure systems to climate and disaster risks while supporting sustainable development.

What is the Significance of CDRI initiative to India?

  • The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) provides a platform for India to emerge as a global leader on climate Action and Disaster Resilience.
  • CDRI boosts India's soft power, but more importantly it has wider connotation than just economics, as synergy between disaster risk reduction, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Climate Accord provides for sustainable and inclusive growth.
  • Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure is the best option to complement the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
  • CDRI also facilitate India’s support to resilient infrastructure in Africa, Asia, etc. CDRI initiative provide access to knowledge, technology and capacity development for infra developers. It also create opportunities for Indian infrastructure & technology firms to expand services abroad.
