“E9 Initiative” to Accelerate Digital Learning

Minister of State for Education, Shri Sanjay Dhotre attended consultation meeting of Education Ministers of E9 countries on E9 initiative: Scaling up digital learning to accelerate progress towards SDG4 on 6th April, 2021. The consultation is the first of a three-phased process to co-create an initiative on digital learning and skills, targeting marginalised children and youth, especially girls.

About the E9 Initiative

The initiative aims to accelerate recovery and advance the Sustainable Development Goal 4 agenda by driving rapid change in education systems in three of the 2020 Global Education Meeting priorities:

  • Support to teachers
  • Investment in skills
  • Narrowing of the digital divide

This consultation meeting will be the 1st of the 3 phase process to co-create a Digital Learning initiative. Marginalized children and youth, especially girls, would be the target population.

About E9 Partnership

  • It is critical to ask how existing education partnerships can best pool their efforts to achieve the new global education targets and commitments with the advent of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Representing over half of the world’s population and some of the largest education systems in the world, the group of E9 countries (Bangladesh, Brazil, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, and Pakistan) can strengthen political will and collective effort to ensure quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  • The E9 forum aims to achieve the goals of UNESCO’s Education For All (EFA) initiative. It strengthens political will and collective effort to ensure quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  • The forum represents over half of the world’s population and 70% of the world’s illiterate adults. E-9 Initiative has become a forum for the countries to discuss their experiences related to education, exchange best practices, and monitor EFA-related progress.

What is Education For All (EFA) initiative?

  • Education For All (EFA) is a global movement led by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), aiming to meet the learning needs of all children, youth and adults by 2015.
  • EFA was adopted by The Dakar Framework in April 2000 at the World Education Forum in Senegal, Africa, with the goal in mind that all children would receive primary education by 2015.
  • UNESCO has been mandated to lead the movement and coordinate the international efforts to reach Education for All.
  • The EFA goals also contribute to the global pursuit of the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), especially MDG 2 on universal primary education and MDG 3 on gender equality in education, by 2015.
