Inauguration of “Judgments and Orders Portal” and “e-Filing 3.0 module”

Justice Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court of India and Chairperson, e-Committee of the Supreme Court on April 9, 2021 inaugurated a Judgments and Orders Portal for searching past judgments and orders and an e-Filing 3.0 module to allow electronic filing of court documents. The initiatives developed by Pune based e-Courts project team are aimed to strengthen legal system.

The Judgments and Orders search portal is a repository of judgments pronounced by various High Courts in the country.

What is the Purpose of the Judgments and Orders Portal?

The Judgments and Orders Portal provides a facility to search judgments and final orders based on multiple search criteria, like Party Name, Supreme Court Appeals & Petitions, High Courts & Subordinate Courts etc.

What are the Features of the Judgments and Orders Portal?

The main features of the portal are:

  • Free text search facilitates user to search judgments based on any keyword or combination of multiple keywords
  • Users can also search judgments based on various criteria like including bench, case type, case number, year, petitioner/ respondent name, judge name, act, section, disposal nature and decision date. Combination of several search options assist the users to get the desired results.
  • The embedded filtering feature allows further filters on available results, thus adding value to the search.

About the e-Filing 3.0 module

The e-filing 3.0 module, introduced by the e-Committee of the Supreme Court, allows electronic filing of court documents. With the introduction of the new module, there will be no need for lawyers or clients to visit the court premises for filing of a case.

Under the module, there will be no need for lawyers or clients to visit the court premises for filing a case. Further, the filing process can take place even when the court, client, and lawyer are at three different locations.

About E-Courts Project

The eCourts Project was conceptualized on the basis of the “National Policy and Action Plan for Implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Indian Judiciary – 2005” submitted by eCommittee, Supreme Court of India with a vision to transform the Indian Judiciary by ICT enablement of Courts.

The Project was conceptualized on the basis of the National Policy and Action Plan. The national policy aims at the Implementation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the Indian Judiciary in 2005. Similarly, the aim of the project is to transform the Indian Judiciary by ICT-enabled courts.

The main objectives of the Project are to provide efficient & time-bound citizen-centric service delivery; develop, install & implement decision support systems in courts. It also aims to automate the processes to provide transparency of Information access to its stakeholders. Further it aims to enhance judicial productivity and to make the justice delivery system affordable, accessible, and cost-effective.

Need of E-Courts Project

The eCourts project is a recent initiative by the Ministry of Law and Justice of Government of India. It is to provide designated services to litigants, lawyers and judiciary by universal computerization of district and subordinate courts in the country and enhancement of ICT enablement of the justice system.

eCourts Project has been designed to bring Judges, court rooms, litigants and lawyers on a common platform. eCourts will be universal computerization of district and subordinate courts in the country and enhancement of ICT enablement of the justice system.

The project envisages a state-of-the-art case management system for all courts, and a comprehensive solution for Judges, Lawyers, Para Legal Volunteers, Court staff as well as Litigants in a non-intrusive manner without compromising on confidentiality.
